Freedom of expression is a great gift. It must last.

I think this book was an interesting read only because of the historical aspect of the book and the details the author put in to give life to the Mughal era. I'm always intrigued about what life was like in the past. I do think that a lot of her descriptions were wordy and didn't add any interest to the story. Her writing style was a little frustrating, not so poetic and intricate as a Mughal story should be...so that was a little frustrating. I also wasn't completely sold on how the author projected our modern (at times feminist) sensibilities onto the main character. I don't think that's a very fair thing to do to characters of the past who's psyche is a lot different than ours.

This book is so much more engaging than the film. Having finished it I can understand why the changes were made for the screen adaptation, but the book is a lot more satisfying. There's still a little something missing, though; I didn't feel like I connected with any of the characters as much as was intended. I wasn't emotionally invested. A very enjoyable book, but for me it didn't have that special something that made me fall in love with it.

Umm....I have a love/hate thing going on with this book. I had a really hard time getting through it. It's choppy, with fits of cool parts interspersed with ridiculousness. It's not up to par with the first two volumes in the series, and the characters I wanted to read about (Bonnie and the real Damon) got the short shrift. I hope LJ Smith refocuses for the next volume. This is a weird, weird, weird, weird book. My favorite line is near the end, when Elena screams "Bad trees go to hell!" The end of the book finally does have a certain "so bad it's good" charm to it...huh.

An amazing and under appreciated book. At age 37, Meg Mabry, a single, overworked medical engineer, still hasn't found her place in the world, a predicament due in part to her rejection of her heritage. She's the great-granddaughter of Hannah Bass, a woman whose journals about frontier life in New Mexico (dating 1891 to 1902) have become famous thanks to Meg's grandmother Claudia Bass (Bassie), a historian who built her career promoting the diaries. But Meg resents the domineering Bassie (who raised her) and refuses to read the journals, acoping strategy Crook doesn't make entirely credible. Meg finally delves into Hannah's story when she reluctantly accompanies her grandmother from Austin, Tex., to Pecos, N. Mex. There, a discovery at the burial site of Hannah's dogs calls into question the veracity of Bassie's life work. Meg, meanwhile, falls for archeologist Jim Layton and embarks on a journey into her family's past that will confront her with some difficult truths about herself.

This book was recommended by Kara. I am glad I read it. Very enlightening. However, no matter how many books I read based on this time period in American history -- I will NEVER understand how human beings could have treated other human beings in this manner.
