There are several great essays in this book, but my favorite has to be the title essay, about Wallace's trip aboard a luxury cruise ship. His slowy rising paranoia and neurotic desparation (helped along by his rampant abuse of hilarious footnotes) make for a hilarious read.

Fallenwood is a fantasy within a fantasy. The storyline and characters are incredible. Leslie Soule has one amazing imagination. The creativity that Soule uses in her character devolvement was just outstanding. I would have liked to known her as a child. I’m sure she had one wild imagination. Fallenwood had me in a fantasy of my own with the six kingdoms, Kings, Queens, Magician, Jester, Gypsies, Shifters, Fairies, and a Dragon. That's doesn’t even being to touch all the characters in Fallenwood. Like I said, incredible storyline. Sixteen-year-old Ash is struggling with her stepfather's death, and finds herself sucked into a magic realm on a quest for the Great Crystal. Ash teams up with Will, a Magician, Terces the Jester, a cat named Greymalkin, and Prince Edward, who she rescuers from the dungeon of Everdown. I really enjoyed seeing Ash grow into her own strength as a person and finding her own self-worth and the Prince she would fall in love with. Fallenwood is a beautiful fantasy, full of magic, struggles, and love. I recommend Fallenwood as a must read. And for those who love High Fantasy, you’re going to love this book.

Antonia Fraser rarely disappoints and this book is no exception. This is a nice compliment to the letters of Madame Sevigne, because until now I really could not understand quite the "fervor" of Madame' S's letters to her daughter regarding the rising stars and the fading has beens that were gracing or exiting Louis XIV's bed. All is now explained. And yes, we are absolutely indulging in some self-admitted wish fulfillment here, because in the end it is the bookworm, the studious one, the intelligent woman who ends up being the "wife" of Louis XIV in all sense of the word. Okay, aside from shoe-horning myself into Louis XIV's bed (and this man sounds fascinating) what is even MORE fascinating is the tug of war between Louis' emotional needs (and his mistresses were not just a f**k) and the direct conflict maintaining his "mistresse et titre" and his role (which he took extremely seriously) as a moral example, a role that he saw, and others also saw, as part of his role as king. Not to mention, he was as concerned for his mortal soul as any Catholic (and he was quite devout), and his struggles with the church and how this impacted his stature as a moral leader was fascinating. Exceptionally well done book.

I really enjoyed this book. It was wonderful bouncing back and forth between Sarah and Little Bee's perspectives. While I found myself looking forward to Sarah's chapters more, especially with Charlie, Bee's sections had such imagery and inspiring quotes. As the booklet says, you can't give away too much about the book, but I definitely recommend it. A very thought provoking book that makes you think about the world in a bigger perspective.

I've been planning to read Carol Goodman for a long time...Glad I finally got here... Now I'm looking forward to several of her other books I have stockpiled. Who'd think a girl's school for the arts would be so filled with intrigue -- not just intrigue, but intrigue that goes back decades to the founders of the then avant garde concept of art for women -- and female partners in a school and in life and the ensuing jealousies and .... well you just need to read it to discover what the school's new recently widowed teacher -- who has a special interest in changling stories and her teen daughter, now a student discover and how it all unfolds. Really enjoyed this book -- and while I thought I had the reveal figured out several times...I was wrong, then I was right then I was wrong again. Fun to be wrong...about book plots.

This book is full of cutesy examples that helped me remember the concepts. I would love to see books on geometry and algebra by this author.
This was well written and very enjoyable. Although the life circumstances differed somewhat from the movie, they were still believable.
Steinbeck has the power to use words to make me walk in the muddy streets of the strikers camp, smell the beans, meat and stale coffee, and to know the faces of each of the characters in this book. Doc Burton was perfect with his probing questions and personal unresolved commitment to what is "right". My sympathy was for the workers who were being manipulated not only by the growers, but the organizers. This is a hard hitting book, but I was left hanging at the end. It is typical Steinbeck to make the reader carry on the story in their own mind, but the ending in this book left me cold.

I didn't find this book to be scary either as I am very rarely frightened by books. I did have high hopes for it, as the American film version is one of the few movies that really creeped me out. (I'm a big horror film fan but none have stayed with me as long as The Ring. I can freak myself out just thinking about it.) I found the book interesting, but not scary. As mentioned by others, it is sufficiently different enough from the films to be engaging and I liked the differences very much. I'm curious about the Japanese version; would like to see it to compare it to this book and the American film. I will say, though, that I found the writing in this book to be very simplistic. Maybe that is why I didn't find it eerie -- there just wasn't enough description for me. Not a vivid enough picture was painted. I didn't find myself very sympathetic to the characters either, though their plight was one that should definitely evoke sympathy. All in all, I did enjoy reading it, but primarily for comparative purposes. If I wasn't such a fan of the film, I don't think I'd care for the book very much. I suppose this is one of the VERY rare times I liked the movie better.
