Okay...interesting but I didn't learn a lot...obviously it's someone's take on what it might be like to be autistic.

Loved, loved, loved this story! I can't imagine how twisted she felt to have to choose between two men. I don't know how she saw past all the women that Kellan used or how she could possibly keep Denny from carving out a future for them both. I was really conflicted and I felt her turmoil as if it were me. (thank God it's not) This was really an intense read that had me thinking about it for days after I finished reading it.

good if you like melodramatic redheads, bosom friends, kindred spirits, or canadians.

This book shows a lot of promise-a lot of the ideas and premises are interesting: The fragmentation of America with the hicks in the interior forming the Confederate states or "Jesusland" and the highly technical people on the coasts drifting towards either China (good luck with that) or Europe, respectively. The ideas of social biology or genetic determinism are interesting too, with the "bonobos" and the "thirteens," but the story and characters lose momentum at about page 200, and for me, they never got that momentum back. The story becomes more about who has the biggest ****, and how females are desperate to spread their legs for psychopaths. The plot becomes byzantine, with alteplanos in Peru somehow tying into genetic thirteens on Mars. I may still be willing to try "Altered Carbon" after this, but I can't say I'm impressed with how well Morgan does or doesn't spin a yarn.

There are many parenting books out there that are as controversial as they are popular. You use what you find helpful and ignore what doesn't fit in with your own personal parenting philosophy. I found most of Goleman's techniques in this book to be insightful and invaluable. Too often, we may find ourselves giving in to venting our anger or frustration at our children for our own emotional benefit, forgetting that they are not adept at reading their own feelings much less yours. It is too easy to discount our little ones' cries as merely manipulative attempts to get what they want. (The author DOES recognize that children DO try to manipulate adults in this way and recommends not using emotion coaching in those instances.) This is a realistic, practical, and easily read book told from the perspective of a father who also relays helpful instances in his own life where he'd used emotion coaching. One benchmark that I often use to judge parenting books are their philosophies on punishment, particularly time-outs. Goleman believes in the proper implementation of time-outs. They are to be consistent and respectful, not opportunities to emotionally berate or humiliate children. He believes that it is best used for children aged 3-8 and should last about a minute. You may want use Amazon's search-within-a-book feature and search for "time-out" to get a better idea. The author sites studies showing that emotional intelligence is linked to higher reading and math IQ's, social competence, and physical health. We all wish the best for our children, and reading this book will help you to be the best parent you can be. More than that, you've probably noticed, that our children have a lot more benefits available to them than we did (baby care gadgets, nutritional food, innovative schooling, etc.) and yet, if I were to choose one benefit of our present to have as a child, I would have wished that my own parents had read this book.

Alma Guillermoprieto is one of the best chroniclers of Latin America for English readers. Her subjects are amazing, the reporting is quality (while a little superficial at times). The real gem here is that it's accessible to fans of Latin America as a narrative guide to the social issues of the day, as well as a fascinating first read for people without the background.
Wasn't as impressed by Kafka as I was perhaps supposed to be. Maybe it was the translation. Very depressing stuff - highlights his awful relationship with his father better than any analysis or historical take, however.
