This book was so good. It was hard to put down and it carries such a deep story. This is a thinking book and it is so good. You can't really read it when you're exhausted though, because nothing will make sense. But this is one of those books you won't easily forget.

Tough to comment on so hard on the heels of finishing it. Marxist interpretations of racial formation can be a little tough to handle. I think a lot of people struggle to digest Roediger for a variety of reasons. Some people don't want to talk about race at all. Some people don't want to talk about whiteness in particular. Some people think Marxist interpretations of race come off as dispassionate, or just flat out misguided. It's certainly a germinal text (if not _the_) in whiteness studies, so anyone interested in American racial formation and theory should read it; the same goes for anyone curious about whiteness studies. It's a complex read though, particularly for anyone not accustomed to reading labor history. It is definitely worth giving a crack (or several -- it probably takes several reads, in companion with other works on race & whiteness to get somewhere with this text).

An excellent book. I read this memoir of growing up Chinese American in California in graduate school, and was deeply moved by it. I particularly appreciated Hong Kingston's intertwining of ancient myth and contemporary immigrant challenges. Beautiful, powerful language. The first chapter, No Name Woman, about the terrible fate of a pregnant aunt in China, is unforgettable. This book, more than any other, made me believe my immigrant stories were also worth telling. This book, more than any other, made me into a writer.

This amazing book is about a girl named Mary. Her parents do not care about her and left her in the care of their servants. When her parents and her servants all die from a sickness, Mary is moved from India to London to her "hunch back" uncles house which has about 100 rooms and most of them locked. Mary meets a friend named Dicken who helps her realise her love towards gardens and nature. Mary is trying to find the hidden key that leads to the garden of her unlce's wife who passed away. I can connect to Mary and her love towards nature because I love going ot doors and enjoy looking at gardens just like Mary. In gardens there are alot to explore and alot to discover. I rate this book 5 stars because I think this book is just incredible. The details are so amazing and it is just the type of book I can treasure forever! I recommend this book to people who like classics and fiction/realistic fiction books.

I liked reading Patty Duke's story, but I found the transition between her story and the psychologist's information awkward. The psychobabble was boring. There was a lot of repetition. And Patty Duke's story was heartfelt and interesting, but not the best written piece of work. Still, if you or someone you love is bipolar, this book has helpful information. If it weren't for that, it would be worth only 2-stars to me.

A book so good, I missed my bus stop on more than one occasion because I was too engrossed. Lodge explores a group of Catholic college students and the priest that leads them both in school and then traces their lives afterwards. Caught in a changing world of cultural upheaval, they are often left asking the question of how far CAN you go before being dashed off to hell? Hilarious, this will make you a Lodge fan for life.

I think I'll start off by saying that I want the second book to be out now so I can pick it up and read it. I love how the author intertwines the characters thinking along with the narration, making it flow very smoothly. Parts of the book seemed a little draggy, but over all it was very good and very compelling. I definitely recommend reading this one!
