This is a powerful collection that delivers, in full detail, slaves' varied and unforgettable perspectives of slavery. I appreciated the juxtaposition of longer narratives with brief excerpts and quotes, and the inclusion of both positive and negative recollections of such an important period in America's history. Beyond individual slaves' stories, this book provides a remarkable sense of the struggle encountered by all when little support was provided after emancipation.

In the midst of a mom's busy schedule which can be so overwhelming it is hard to even think about entertaining or to recollect "good old fashion fun". This book adds light to the benefits of jumping out of our busy schedules to bond with our children, family and friends and lays out the fundamentals and plans to do so (from turning playdate snacks into a pirate adventures to hosting large dinner parties). This is a must have for any mom or expecting mom. What a great shower gift!

Read it. Right now. If you like to bake - read this book. I have often longed for a book that explained the chemistry behind baking. Yard does so in a way that makes perfect sense and that I can apply to my everyday baking and not just the recipes in her book. I applied two (just two!) 'tricks' I learned from this book and people swooned that my cookies were the best ever. Read this book.

** spoiler alert ** I really didn't think it could be worse than the first one, but sheesh, was I wrong. Absolutely NOTHING happens in this book--sure, a few characters die, but the plot of this "trilogy" is not moved forward at all, the backstory (which it could use) is not developed, and random shit is thrown together just because it seemed like the author thought it was cool. Parkour! Cloistered nuns with a secret! Fights in nightclubs! And, the Holy Grail of MacGuffins, we literally have the Ark of the Covenant. WTF. Twelve Hawks' writing is lazy, full of lame metaphors and flat characters, with such a contrived plot, that he doesn't even seem to bother to try to explain it or make it worth a reader's time to invest. I thought these books would be, at worst, lite escapism trash, but it truly is terrible, like some half-baked sci-fi premise that you'd see on NBC (and later cancelled after half a season).

This book was really interesting and an easy read. Exactly what i needed as a distraction. I enjoyed reading it. The writing style was a little different, but still very enjoyable to read.

There's a lot o' hype about this book, so thought I would give it a shot. As fascinating as it is (in just the first 30 pages), I sometimes wonder if some of Levitt's correlations are totally random and just seem to make sense. I guess I'll keep reading...
