Participated in an e-chat with the author today. She inspires...foster reading by letting children read...now what about that! I find her message refreshingly simple and powerful.

I had no idea how much influence Brautigan has had over a whole slew of recent short prose until I read In Watermelon Sugar. It seems the root of a whole genre: fragmented, violent, flat. Eerily familiar, too...

I have to admit I had my reservations about this book. I loved the premise of it but I had a really hard time getting into it. Being determined to finish it, I trudged my way through. About two-thirds of the way into the book, it really started to pick up. I think the first two-thirds was meant to build the scene and set the stage for what turned out to be a really great and emotional ending. The characters were very well written and believable. I enjoyed traveling through their journey with them. The events in the story were realistic and at times quite emotional. If anything I wish the author had created a bit more passion or attraction between Anna and Tyler. There were some small moments between them, though. Anna’s relationship with her dad was very well written, although, as I said, the author takes quite a bit of time building it up. Overall, it wasn’t a book that hooked me from the start, but I am glad I took the time to see it through and finish it. For most of the book I was considering a two star rating, but the ending pulled it up to three stars for me. A good debut novel for author Jessi Kirby. By the way, LOVE the cover!!!

An epistolary tale of English courtship and society, Lady Susan is one of my favorite Jane Austen works. Perhaps even #1. Never in any other Austen work is the villainess portrayed with such wit and wink. Love it.

I wasn't expecting a true story but loved this story. This author reminds me of Elizabeth Gilbert (who wrote 'Eat, Love and Pray'.

Pretty ok Dessen. Macy's father died and Macy feels the need to be stalwart in order to support her mother. She thinks that if she can plug herself into perfection, she'll be safe. So she studies for her SATs, goes to yoga, and takes over for her boyfriend at the library info desk while he goes to Brain Camp. By chance, she meets a gang of lovable weirdos working for a catering business. Included is the breathtaking Wes, and what perfect timing, for Brain Camp boyfriend soon suggests, over email, that he and Macy "take a break" because Macy has been too forthcoming with her feelings. Macy and Wes become tight, engaging in an ongoing game of Truth. M is surprised by how honest she can be with Wes about all that has happened to her. She and Kristy, one of the other lovable weirdos, become BFF and soon Macy finds herself changing, living in the present, and grieving honestly for her father. But...what is up with the library information desk being staffed by three high school students and no librarians? And why are the library employees uptight beyotches with bad fashion sense? C'mon Sarah Dessen. You know better.

I was disappointed to find another series that contains so many elements of Harry Potter's world, but the story was interesting enough. When the villian is introduced as "Lord Valentine", who everyone thought was dead for years and who is obscessed with pure blood, I was rolling my eyes. It feels as if everyone is writing the same story these days and I'm surprised that they can actually get away with it. I could see where part of the story was going, but in the end, there was a twist that I wasn't expecting. Because of that, I probably could have given it 3 and a half stars.
