It doesn't happen too often, but I think my enjoyment of this book was impeded by the narrator of the audio version, particularly her portrayal of the main character, Maya. She made Maya sound too babyish, and it sort of ruined the overall effect of the entire book. I wonder what my reaction to the story would have been if I had just read the print version. Would I have enjoyed it more? I think many of my students would enjoy the horse aspects of the story.

Great meditations about computing, technology and startups. I took some ideas about how a real programmer works.

I was immediately engrossed in this book and read it very quickly. It has all the things I like about historical fiction, like the broad scope of time and geography, and the way that the haggadah and the people associated with it served as this continuous throughline. After I read it, though-- and this is probably an issue with me and not with the book at all-- but after I finished then novel and read Brooks's afterword where she describes the real-life inspiration for the story I wished I had read a true history of the Sarajevo Haggadah, probably because I was disappointed that the beautiful story Brooks tells wasn't true. It's really a very good book, though, and I recommend it.

"When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home." Oh, man. This book is so freaking good! (And I'll be honest: it's still hard for me not to cry like a wuss at "Stay gold...")

Although this book is considered a "classic", I'm confused as to why so many people enjoy it to the extent they do. Yes, we get to see the stages the main character goes through during her decline and how she feels while she's in this state of mind, but I found it more annoying than thought provoking.

Mostly interesting, but I heard a critique of the book is that Schiff doesn't break up paragraphs and sentences very well. This does not make for a great audio book and I had a hard time finishing it. I will have to pick up a hard copy to finish some day.

"Companions, the creator seeks, not corpses, not herds and believers. Fellow creators, the creator seeks- those who write new values on new tablets. Companions, the creator seeks, and fellow harvesters; for everything about him ripe for the harvest. But he lacks a hundred sickles: so he plucks ears and is annoyed. Companions, the creator seeks, and such as know how to whet their sickles. Destroyers they will be called, and despisers of good and evil. but they are the harvesters and those who celebrate. Fellow creators, Zarathustra seeks, fellow harvesters and fellow celebrants: what are herds and shepherds and corpses to him?"
