The mega-paradigm shift explained by a leading networks scientist in plain, if elegant, English. Though this book first came out in 2002, it's well worth reading for the light it shines on the current financial crisis.

I really liked this one. It is a slight cross between The Uglies, Hunger Games, and The Truman Show. It has that same type of feel. It was a quick, easy read for me, I finished it in a couple days and when I would put it down I would find that I was stuck in it - I always felt like I was doing something wrong and being watched. that means the story sucked me in. :) I like this author so far - this is the first book I have read of hers.

I read this book when it first came out and was enthralled by it. My nine-year-old daughter saw me reading it yesterday, and when I walked by the desk it was on, there was a note on it that said, "This book has 897 pages and my smart mom is reading it AGAIN!" :) Gotta love that girl.

The woman who gave me this book inscribed it, saying that it could not merely be read, it must be felt. I knew as I read it and afterward that it was the most visceral novel I'd experienced in a long while. Reflecting back, now, on reading it, verifies that idea in yet another dimension: I distinctly remember laying on my down comforter in my college dorm, propped against the wall behind the headboard of my bed, enraptured in this book... emotionally, temporally, even visually. It's known that depth of emotion is key in robust memory encoding. Winterson is one of my three favorite authors - she brings magic to any text she touches - and this is one of her two best novels. I may have trouble remaining friends with anybody who does not have some modicum of appreciation for _The Passion_ after reading it. "You play, you win. You play, you lose. You play."

this is one damn book you can read over and over, its so utterly fascinating.. you get touchy at times, ruth is so vulnerable a character, u cannot help admiring and sympathising with her. the way she looks at life and the essence of it, it killed me. and hats off to jane hamilton, i thoroughly enjoyed going through each line of it.

There were a lot of typos in this edition of the story which were distracting for me. Overall though it was a good story and an enjoyable series.

I have been researching soapmaking for a few weeks now, and I have read several books on the subject, and this is my favorite so far. The cover, IMO, is not good...so don't judge it by its cover. It has good basic & luxurious specialty recipes for vegetable-based soap for face, body, hair, baby, kitchen, laundry, liquid soap, etc (it does include one basic recipe that includes beef tallow for comprehensiveness). I LOVE the pictures and its simplicity. If you want to understand the scientific saponification process you should not get this book. I have tried several of the recipes: Basic Recipe Two with Grapefruit Essential Oil, Peppermint & Tea Tree Wake-Up Bar, and Lavender & Oatmeal Exfoliating Bar. They have all turned out perfectly.
The Susan Mallery story is a Harlequin reprint. I only read the Susan Mallery book Completely Smitten. The first 150 pages rolled along, not to exciting, very clean. The heroine Haley was way to sheltered and naive for me. She had never been away from home until she meets the hero, Kevin. She ran away from her fiancee after he voiced doubts about their upcoming marriage, which was a bright move by her because he was a a selfish, ugly, controlling dork who was preparing to be an associate minister at her father's church. The only reason she was with him was because everyone talked her into it and she didn't want to let the parish down. It was a little annoying how sheltered she was, she had never swore, drank, been to a bar, seen a penis, had to have the H describe the act of sex...come on this is a contemporary! Kevin and Haley meet at a bar and he didn't want anything to do with Haley, wasn't attracted to her, but ended up rescuing her from some bad boys' unwanted advances and took her back to her room after she became drunk on margaritas. He didn't touch her or want to touch her even after she through herself at him. She was very sweet though and he was very much a gentleman even though he kept saying what a bad boy he was- I didn't buy it. Haley ends up driving him home to Texas (from Kansas) after he is injured. They get to know each other and their relationship grows. Then the last 70 pages got to the meat of the book, you saw the tender love developed between H and h. It became a tear jerker and had a couple of beautiful love scenes. I ended up liking it a lot by the end. I am undecided as to whether I am going to read the second story in the book, I bought it for the Susan Mallery story and have not seen much positive about it.

Oh Robin McKinley, how I love you. These stories, no exception. What struck me about these stories was how much kindness I found in the characters who inhabit them. In many cases the kindness of strangers (or strange entities that aren't human) shape the events of the tale, and I was left feeling warmed by each one. Lovely.

As good as "the shadow of the wind". Still very grabbing. Passion and sadness. Tout aussi bon que "l'ombre du vent". Captivant. Passion et tristesse.
