Pretty good, but now i see what people are saying, there was a section that seemed to be missing, and yes i had to go back a few times to make sure it was not imagined.

Perhaps my absolute favorite, Their Eyes is a novel with which I truly have a relationship. I love Hurston's lyrical voice, I love her heroine, Janie, and I love the themes. Here's part of my masters thesis introduction: Zora Neale Hurston’s creation of the complex character, Janie Mae in Their Eyes Were Watching God achieved the goal of putting forth a strong black female voice long before America experienced the sweeping changes of the Civil Rights and Women’s Movements. Lorraine Bethel points out the courage required to make such a radical artistic choice, “She wrote as a Black woman-identified Black woman, valuing her experiences…in a society where these areas of experience are generally regarded as valueless, insignificant, and inferior to white/male culture” (11)...Hurston’s work emphasizes the individual’s freedom to seek spiritual, sexual, and emotional fulfillment. Her female characters retain their optimism and strength despite racial discrimination and male violence. They find outlets for their creativity, even if, sometimes especially when, the outlet deviates from standard conventions. They struggle, experiencing the harshness of life, yet eventually manage to develop inner peace and acceptance.

Library discard, in my collection. Adult fiction. This very small book is very good. Written from the point of view of the retiring janitor on graduation evening. Shows the influence a "lowly" janitor had on many. It's a keeper!

Really good, but not a light hearted read. Made me think a lot about buying more food storage, and making sure I have more than just food!

In the vein of Sedaris or Vowell, Rakoff is a contributor to This American Life. His stories are short, sassy and quite enjoyable. Of particular note is his essay about the Log Cabin Republicans entitled "Hit me Daddy."
