I really enjoyed this book and was sorry to it end--I wanted to spend more time with the characters.

Only flipped through the first twenty pages, and the sour story of April and her husband made me want to break down with everyday routines, grab a suitcase, get a ticket and fly to a place with a name too strange to forget.

For me, this book boils down to its account of rain. When different characters recount the events of the titular murder, they disagree about if it was raining or not. This kind of ambiguity is something that can be portrayed very effectively and subtly in film by changing details incidentally. In this book, which can only give one word at a time, it became an irritating train of statements along the lines of "It was raining"/"It was sunny"/"It had just stopped raining"/"There was a downpour." This and plenty of other similar disagreements make the book's points about ambiguity and irony far too loudly. Maybe I'm focusing too much one specific aspect, but beyond that, I didn't find myself caring about the events or characters. They didn't come alive to me at all. This book is very short, only about 130 pages. I read about 80 or so, and couldn't see any reason to finish the rest. I would love to see it as a movie, but, until then, there's Rashomon.

Honestly, why do I keep picking up Karen Armstrong's books? It's not that she is a bad writer, just an exceptionally boring one. When I listen to 'Islam: A Short History' I feel like I'm being hit by a verbal machine gun fire of names, dates and places. Unfortunately few of these fact 'bullets' remain in my brain. She starts off innocently enough, giving an account Muhammad's life and then ....'BANG, BANG BANG!' she hits you with a blitzkrieg of boring, impersonal facts. About three quarters of the way through the book Armstrong picks you up, dusts you off, and tries to console you with a bit of modern history on Islamic fundamentalism. But it's too late. I'm already suffering from academic PTSD. Yet I sense that I'll still read her next book, 'A Short History of Myth'...

I HATED this book. Who wants to speak rabbit?
Horrific language, lots of sex stuff and a rape scene... are we sure this is juvenille lit??? Story was compelling but I felt like the end was a cop out. Seriously, he couldn't find a better way to resolve things?
