This is one of those books I don't even have to read to a)know I hate and b)know is an utterly worthless steaming pile of recycled new-age psudo-philosophical ersatz-eastern-spirtualism tripe masquerading as "personal development" reading. Why? Because this sort of book is published every few years with a new title, a new cover, and the same dumbed down easy promises. The real Secret? There is no Secret. Put that in your koan and smoke it.

The Cowboy Poet kind of threw me for a loop because I wasn't expecting the level of depth that I ended up getting. First we have Tyler. Tyler's a submissive who's trying really hard to deny and change who he is. Then we have Clint. Clint's an older cowboy who's comfortable with himself and the fact that he's a dom. Clint and Tyler meet at some sort of cowboy festival. Tyler's writing an article on the festival for his magazine. Clint's the best and most well-known cowboy poet there. Clint agrees to be interviewed by Tyler and we're off and running. This book is more of a character study than anything, and the characters are well done. Tyler's past has made him ashamed of his need to be submissive and that shame runs deep. You get a very clear picture of the struggle going on inside of him. He wants to submit to Clint and ends up doing so but he's hesitant. He also compares the way Clint treats him to the demoralizing way he was treated by the man who was his sex partner in the past. Clint is a patient, quiet and thoughtful man. He's a true dom. That quietness he has about him really conveys just how stable and authentic he is. His deep well of calm helps keep Tyler balanced when Tyler starts to panic or have doubts. Clint is commanding and stern enough to make Tyler feel dominated but Clint never pushes or forces Tyler to do anything. There is a very delicate balance in Clint and Tyler's relationship and, yes, Tyler runs once but you understand why he runs. When Clint shows up in the city to get Tyler, I wanted to cheer. Claire Thompson makes the reader believe that these two flawed people belong together. They're definitely better together than they are apart. This book is also a sad, cautionary tale of the emotional reprecussions when a submissive gets tangled up with the wrong person. A lot of damage can be done and some of Tyler's inner dialogue was heartwrenching. This wasn't your regular cowboys with rope and paddles story. That's what makes it so very good.

Perhaps I am in the wrong mental state to fully appreciate this book, but I thought it was awful. I appreciate how honest Vanzant is about her life and the scenes surrounding her daughter's death brought me to tears. The rest of the book just seemed like a never ending saga of drama and Vanzant playing the victim. We all have flaws and the bible is filled with flawed characters that God used to teach and lead his people, but some of Vanzant's flaws are quite scary considering her age and experience. I do not understand how she was thirty years old before she had a clear understanding that she had been raped as a child. It sounded like a hyperbole to me. I also was taken aback when she wrote that she spent the first 50 years of her life insane. That is quite a statement coming from a woman who made her living from being a spiritual healer and a Priestess. I was done when she wrote about not paying taxes for a year because she didn't think she had to and wound up on a payment plan with the IRS to the tune of 30k a month. This woman lost the majority of her money for such a silly reason and at that point she was well in to her 40's I believe. I won't use this review as a platform to rip this author. Obviously, she has been through enough and she goes on and on about being a bad mother, not believing her own hype, marrying a cheater, etc. I don't need to add anything else to it. I will say that women really need to find a grain of happiness and hold on tight to it. Vanzant needs to stop blaming men and her absent father for all of her mistakes. At some point you have to pick up the pieces, dust yourself off and keep it moving. It does not sound like she has found peace. It sounds like she is in need of cash and trying to get herself back out there. I am not mad at the sister, but this book was totally depressing and really put a damper on my good mood.

Read for English 3 Honors. Loved it. Such a beautiful story, characters and setting. It's the perfect mix of action and just slow, beautiful writing. I especially liked Taylor and Estevan. 4 stars.

A tribute how good the Coen Brothers are as film makers. There is more texture in the book and a little more story.

As with all of my reviews, I'm not going to talk about the plot here. That's for you to enjoy when you curl up with your Kindle (or other eReader) and a cup of tea or coffee. But I will bring out a number of things about the book I enjoyed. Gabriel's Return starts off fast, forcing you to dive into the story. I really appreciated this. As you might recall, my major complaint with Gabriel's Redemption was that it took a long time, nearly half the book, before I felt like the pace of the story was moving at full steam. Gabriel's Return is nothing like that. Hats off to the author, too, for making the planet of Eden so believable. As the characters traverse the planet, it feels alive and real. It's definitely the most enjoyable part of the entire book, and in some ways, I wish the author would have expanded on the planet. I mean that in a positive way. That's a sign of a believable story and world: When the reader can't get enough and wants to know more. Umstead does a fantastic job of this. Overall, I really liked Gabriel's Return and I have to say I'm looking forward to the next story (which this book sets up nicely). If you haven't read the first book, don't fret. I think you can get along just fine with this one. But don't let that statement stop you. Both books are good and worthy of your time for recreation. Pros + +Story picks up in the first pages, getting you right into the action +Very believable planet of Eden +Fantastic twist near the end of the story (I didn't see it coming!) Cons - -The second quarter of the story is a little slow, but picks up again halfway through -It might be me, but the politics stuff was a little confusing. Without telling you why (don't want to ruin the story), I `ll just say I had trouble making sense of it -Evan Gabriel, the main character. I feel distant from him. Knowing more about him through the narrative would be nice
I love that it is written from the mind of the little boy. So innocent. Sad book but don’t worry... it ends better.

One of the most fascinating and powerful books I have read in years. I knew nothing of everyday life in North Korea - it's so alien that at times this almost reads like science fiction. The details are painful and fascinating, but at the core this is a passionate look at how imagination and hope can triumph over even the most unbelievable of circumstances. I'm in awe of the creativity and research involved in crafting this. I know it will stay with me for years.

This book was well-written, but I preferred The Double Bind by Bohjalian. Usually court dramas are not my favorite, but Bohjalian's style on this one held my interest.
