I learned an immense amount from this book - historically and also in terms of appreciation for the times. If you know a little bit about Constantine or are interested in learning more, this will be right up your alley. The story is interesting, but Vidal often pontificates (maybe in keeping with Julian's personality?) which leads to a few painfully slow moments. Glad I read it though. And I'm tempted by Lincoln, although not having the same interest in the anti-bellum era as the Roman Empire, I wonder whether I'd have the self-discipline to muster through it.

I haven't read many books whose main characters aren't really too likable but are still sympathetic to the reader. This is one. Tom Perrotta (who also wrote Election; what is it with this man and his innate talent for writing books that make great movies?) gives us Sarah and Todd; two cliched yet animated marrieds who start an affair with each other. She's an angry feminist who experimented with bisexuality in college before settling down with an older, secretly perverted man. He's the "Prom King," an all-around nice guy who's nonchalantly attractive and magnetic, with a beautiful and likable (she was my favorite) wife. Throw these two in with their funny and obnoxious kids, their strange and confused partners, and a convicted sex offender who just moved back into the neighborhood with his elderly mother, and you get a book that you don't really want to put down, but once you're finished you breathe a sigh of relief.

D; Just couldn't get into it. Listened to first CD 3 times and still no interest. Returned to the library. I'm sure it's an okay book, just not my interest.
Here's what I wrote in my livejournal after finishing this book: "I finished the latest Harry Potter book on Saturday. I don't even really know if I like the things or not, but they are literary crack cocaine: I simply MUST KNOW what's going to happen. I don't think the prose is anything special, and I really don't give a rat's ass about most of the characters (I find myself constantly screaming at them), but I'll be damned if I can resist the fuckin' plot. I don't care either way about the outcome, I just need to know what it is."

I really enjoyed this book and found Mr. Gregory to be someone of character. He does not paint himself wholly in the positive and there were moments when I questioned his choices with cocked eyebrow. But undeniably this man lived, wholly. I couldn't help but think that it would be interesting to read his wife's story. Mr Gregory also worked for the rights of women, was a vegan and a raw foodist refusing traditional treatment for cancer. I'll be reading more works by Mr.Gregory. He's pretty cool.
I want to give this 3.5 stars. I loved some parts of it, and found others to be meandering and long-winded. A ruthless editor could have done wonders with a book like this.

I am so embarassed to admit that not only did I read this ridiculous vampire romance, but I actually fell for the vampire character. I swore at the beginning that she would never get me, but she did.

the premise is interesting enough (and it's half the battle won for a sci-fi novel really), but the narrative was kinda lacking and i couldn't empathise with any of the characters at all.

This is a book about a daughter of Egyption-Greek mother and a Palestian father. Born in Boston, Nidali was raised in Kuwait. Her teen years were spent in Egypt, then they came to the U.S. and lived in Texas after Kuwait is invated by Iraq, as her father got work in the U.S. I had a VERY hard time with how the father treated his family. It is a story of perserverance and grit. It is not a comfortable book to read, but I am glad that I stuck with it.It makes me appreciate my cushy life.

This book tries to explain why Western societies in general rose to such dominance in the world, as opposed to say, Aboriginal Australians. When I was younger, my dad told me, "people in more Northern latitudes had to struggle to survive, so that's why those countries industrialized sooner, while people in tropical climates could just lounge around and pick bananas off of trees." I guess that idea is not uncommon, because this book actually addressed it at one point. Basically, the book tries to explain differences in rates of technological advances, political complexity, and immunity to communicable diseases between societies based on geographical factors of the location where the society originated. Like the local plants and animals that were available for domestication, and the ease or difficulty for people to interact with neighboring societies because of mountains, deserts, or seas. And then how those differences usually led to one society pretty much completely decimating or swallowing up the other when they met. Along the way you also learn some interesting history and linguistics. I think if you like watching the History Channel you'll enjoy this book. Warning though, it gets pretty long, and a bit repetitive.
