Oh, I love this guy. I really do. Though I read alot, Roth is the writer I keep coming back to - and when I do, it's a wonder that I ever read anything else. No matter when I come back and read one of his books, it's a new and amazing experience that fuses perfect subject matter with (stylistically) some of the best writing I've ever read. Even with Portnoy, Roth might be the only writer who can produce a novel that is simultaneously very much descriptive about the humor of sexuality and very much an important and meaningful book about being Jewish, being American, and being Jewish-American. A stranger approached me when i was reading this, just to tell me, "The last line is like a revelation!" And he was right. I wouldn't suggest this as anyone's first venture into Roth. I began with his Zuckerman novels, which are more serious - and to appreciate his comedy here, I think I needed that background.

Stephen King says: "Samarin is an escaped Russian political prisoner who turns up in the village of Yazyk during the Russian Revolution, only to discover he's fallen into a deadly struggle between religious fanatics (the men have all castrated themselves), a lost troop of Czech legionnaires, and an officer descending into homicidal mania. The narrative drive is amazing. So is the cold clarity of Meek's imagination."

I liked how the author had a note at the end describing why he wrote the book this way.

People would probably recognize this as the book that the movie "Elling" was based upon. One of my absolute favorites for a long time, although the previous book in the series was a tad bit better.
Apparently I do not like Ian McEwan novels as much as everyone else. I enjoyed Saturday more than Amsterdam. The writing was lovely. Overall, though, it was just not my cup of tea.

A grueling tale of a madman tring to prevent another man from leaving the desert because he witnessed an accidental death.
I thought this was ho-hum for a Belpre Award. Solid addition to most picture book collections.
Peter Gomes died this week, following a stroke in December. A Boston/Cambridge person, chaplain at Harvard, and very respected. I am inspired to read one or more of his books, starting with this. I know many people who loved and learned from him. Update -- read the book -- like it -- will recommend this to other people.

Couldn't help but finish the series this weekend. Great children's books.
