This is the best magical realism I have read yet and the only contemporary author of fiction I have encountered who deserves to sit at the same table as Salman RushdieHe combines the narrative brilliance and popular appeal of someone who has worked in graphic novels/comics for many years with an unusual sense of the novel, both where it should take you and how fast you should get there.

i think to kill a mockingbird is a good read the fact that lawyer helped out a man no matter what his race was no matter what other people thought.

** spoiler alert ** I first read this 4 years ago and didn't get it at all. I thought it was flat, obscure and stupid. I thought it was for the literary elite because I couldn't for the life of me see the things that the people saw. But my interest in it was peaked again when I read his short story "Hills Like White Elephants." So I tried reading it again, and I was really moved. Who cares if it's the "typical Lost Generation" stuff? And what's wrong with it reading like a play? I almost think that it adds to the strength. I think for me, it's not about its style or its brilliance. It's about the people. What clinched it for me was Jake's self-assuring reaction to how he brought together Brett and Pedro Romero, and Montoya's reaction to it as well. "Everything is on such a clear financial basis in France. It is the simplest country to live in. No one makes things complicated by becoming your friend for any obscure reason."

I have a thing about these books. I love the protagonist, Thursday Next, and although there isn't much of some of the elements that I usually really want in a novel, such as character development, these are action-packed, wild stories about an alternative world that is just so clever.

A fun read; great mix of 2004 travelog with the travels, prayers, exploits and monastic life of St Francis & his followers...the author is down to earth, has a genuine feel for the St Francis and a good sense of humor as she drives criss crossing Italy following the walking Francis. I think worth reading before/after traveling to Italy. Well documented.
Bizarre family that lives above a pet shop - that's what I remember.

One of my top five books. I love the character of Lily Bart, and Edith Wharton's writing - just awesome.

Better than I thought. The main character works at the glove counter at Neiman, where no one ever shops anymore. She looks for love and finds it, loses it, in a wealthy older man before finding it again in someone her own age.

I loved this book. Its a dark, intense, rich read. Dostoyevsky crafts such complex, interesting characters and delves deep into their thoughts. Raskolnikov is a prideful, cynical man who commits a coldhearted murder, but he is also innately generous and idealistic--although an unlikely hero, you find yourself rooting for him.
