Paul Johnson is definitely Old School. He takes the kind of Eurocentric position in praising his chosen list of the greatest creative geniuses of all time (n.b. Jane Austen is the only woman to make the list and all are European or American) that academics of the current generation chomp at the bit to pick apart and ridicule. That said, it was nice reading little snippets about such diverse "creators," from Chaucer to Walt Disney.

From the description, this sounded like a lovely book, but it was a big disappointment for me. It took a long time for the story to get started and there were very few characters that I would call likeable. In fact, the main character, Yair, was extremely un-likeable. There were also some parts of the story that defied belief. I did like the parts about caring for the homing pigeons. Thought there was far, far too much detail about house renovations. I did like the way the two threads tied together, and the story did get better toward the end, but by then I was just reading to finish it.

I loved this book. Once I got into the characters and timeline, I couldn't put it down.

I've been asked to read this book in four different English classes. The first time I read it I was reminded of the beauty of literature. The second time I tried to get a grasp on the seemingly futile efforts of the protagonist and the meaning of blackness in America. But you can read it in many ways: as a literary work, as an essay on race, an essay on history, or an essay on life. I've heard complaints about the book: that the novel writing techniques seem more like exercises than a real addition to literary technique, the plot is boring, etc. But I still stand by Ralph Waldo Ellison.

I'm reading this one to my kids (5 and 9 years old) and they both really like it. The added illustrations and the 3 interactive illustrations via webcam are seriously cool. This is going to be a great kid's series, but wow is it filled with high level vocabulary! I like the way this book ended and look forward to the yet to be finished sequel.

This is an easy read, not too long, but very poignant story of a young preacher sent to the first nation people of the British Columbia coast. It is a story of hard work, fun, tradition, progress, life and death. Not a lot to read, but certainly a lot to think about!

...eh. It was like reading a more simplistic version of The Child Thief. Brom likes what he likes, and reuses themes liberally. I finished it mostly because it was only 142 pages.
