Hard to give this a 5, but way more than a 4. There are many good recent books updating the fascinating story of life on earth, including those by Prothero, Carroll, Shubin, Coyne, etc. They briefly dismiss Creationism/ID as the ideological pseudoscience it is, and concentrate on the fun part, the real science. Miller takes the harder path, which shouldn't even be necessary in the 21st century, giving ID the benefit of the doubt that it might be a genuine scientific hypothesis, and painstakingly shows why it isn't. Furthermore, he shows that the attack isn't just on Darwinian evolution, but on the nature of science itself, by allowing the supernatural into explanations of nature. Our country has greatly benefited from advances in physics, chemistry, geology, and molecular biology. Ironic that many who enjoy those benefits essentially argue against the science behind them. My problem with giving this a 5 is the lengthy discussion trying to reconcile his faith in a purposeful God with the biology he knows so well--kinda lost me. Better to do like Gould and leave them to separate spheres.

I received this book as an Advanced Reader's Edition from Goodreads. At first I wasn't sure what two brothers in Ireland had to do with New York City but the more I read, the more I got into it. McCann weaves the stories of various people living in New York in the 70's together. While it may not seem like an Irish priest, prostitutes, drug addicts, and an affluent couple living on Park Avenue have anything in common, they actually do. Everyone's stories circle around the day that a man tightropes between the World Trade Center towers. I found it facinating that someone actually did this in 1974. McCann explores the underbelly of these peoples' lives and shows how good can come out of the worst of situations. I especially liked how the majority of the book is set during the Vietnam war and then ends in the present with the war on Iraq. It made the feelings of the characters more relatable. Overall I thought this book was quite good and was a different concept than I'm use to seeing. McCann keeps you engaged by letting the reader figure out how everyone is interconnected and letting the characters' stories unfold.

This book is neck and neck with Prince of Tides for the best book that I've read this year. The story is rich and filled with detail and stunning imagery. The storyline is simple, but told with beauty, love and even a hint of pain. I loved it!

This was a good sequel to Wake. I enjoyed this one almost as much as the first one. I was a little disapointed with the ending but other than that it was very good!

A really excellent book in terms of the information presented, but the presentation is incredibly frustrating for the reader. This is a dense, dry book, despite the interesting material it contains.

So much history I did not know about one of my favorite shows. I loved the story telling from all sides in the voices of those who lived it.

This was another Excellent J.D. Robb novel. Eve Dallas keeps you on the edge of your seat, as usual.

Written more like poetry, the lack of chapters and shifting from one person's story and narrative to another's often jolted me, making me feel a bit lost but, therefore, forced to pay attention. Describing common, yet disturbing events in a simplistic, unpretentious, "that's just how it is" way unsettles one. And it's down to society's view on what constitutes beauty and the acceptance of that by others. I love the way that no-one is wholly evil, each had a set of circumstances forcing them to behave how and belive what they did, yet each could have chosen to overcome those circumstances and so aren't wholly blameless either.

A fictionalized account of the little village of Eyam in Derbyshire where the plague of 1666 started. The book was lent to me by my friend, Joan.
