i thought it was really well written i leads well into the second book. it has a lot of world building and introducing you to various other creatures such as elves and dwarfs.

I picked this book up about 20 times without being able to get past the first page. Finally it was required for a class, but the professor assumed we'd all have read it already, so I did in about two weeks. I've heard you can read the whole book out-loud in 24 hours. I've also heard that you can eat 5 rolls of nickels without immediate bodily harm. It's the after effects I worry about.

What a flair for words Ms. Thomas has. Ruby, the narrator, was so beautifully crafted as the rebellious outcast misfit, that despite the fact that she is nothing like me, I was able to completely empathize with her. The author was able to take a squalid and dingy setting, and without sugar-coating it (the descriptions of the filth and stench were quite vivid), managed to romanticize it. Ruby goes about pretending to live a normal life, and one day when she decides to blow off work, she is accosted by Den, a resident of a hidden underground community. The two strike up a friendship, and while Den is unwilling to let Ruby show her the world above, it is just as well because Ruby is full of curiosity about Den's hidden world. When the two stumble upon secret government tunnels, they embark on what will be a life altering adventure for both of them. The entire story was captivating, and the ending was particularly surprising. I thought I had a pretty good idea where she was going with her story, and although I was not entirely wrong, I was still caught by surprise.

Pero sí, es recomendable... de refilón, uno se queda pensando en su sitio dentro de la cultura McWorld y siente peor cargo de conciencia al quedarse más de un minuto viendo Ventaneando o cosas así.

Quite good, this book, intruces very well the way in which Modern Standard German is transcribed in IPA and also explains what to do with dialects and colloquial speech. Their transcription is very narrow and they let the reader see how exact speech can be transcribed. The sample texts are well chosen and especially the dialect texts are explained thoroughly. They represented the German diphthongs in a rather unusual way, but on the other hand, this seems to be closer to the real pronunciation, so this is a good thing. However, there are a few downsides: The Saxon and Swabian texts aren't fully transcribed, instead only a few words are picked from the entire text. Why this was done is never explained and the mere fact is sad. I also noticed a larger bunch of errors in the part about Saxon, while other chapters had almost none at all — these include not only obvious errors in the transcription, but also some typos and mistakes in style (e.g. representing phonemes in [square brackets:] or showing a Middle High German vowel as [ë:]!). Another major problem of the book is that its view is a bit prescriptive. They show, *how* they transcribe certain vowels and consonants in colloquial speech and in dialects, but not *why* they do this. In other words: This books shows how various speakers of German pronounce some words and they give some (rather vague and not always exact) impression on the sound changes of these 3 dialects and in what might be colloqial pronunciation, but they never explain, how one actually recognizes these sounds. How do I distinguish one sound from the other and how do I chose the right symbol? This is not explained. I would rate it 3½ stars, but as there are quite interesting informations indeed, and a nice CD and useful references to other literature, I rather give it 4 than 3.
