This volume has more stories that deal with the supernatural themes rather than the other two types of Bradbury stories that I like - those being the Mars stories and the stories set in a quiet, Midwestern town where some tortured adult is searching for the meaning in life amidst childhood nostalgia. Overall, some really great Bradbury stories, but only a few glimmers of his best and most thought-provoking ideas shone through.

Through elemental and exquisetly constructed prose Duvert led me on a renewed discovery of the underbelly of our western cultures, particularly our capacities and habbits of interpersonal relations. Duvert at once pulls the reader in and instigates a removal within where the reader is allowed the space to critique what is presented. Duvert accomplishes this through several devices, including telling stories of his subjects where he interchanges refereneces to them between the intimate personal pronoun and a more distant descriptive.

I remember from my first run through the Yuuzhan Vong story arc that this was my favourite book. Now rereading the series it still stands as the highlight, so far anyways. The interaction between Anakin and the Shamed Ones, Vua Rapuung and Uunu, are very well written. Several of Vua and Anakin's conversations are hilarious simply due to a lack of understanding. We are shown life as it is behind enemy lines and it makes the aliens less monstrous. As Anakin leaves the Yuuzhan Vong compound you are left with a sense of loss. The chapters with Vehn and Qorl are also very entertaining. I can't remember if either appear again. I hope so. By far my favourite story arc of all the expanded universe, because it changes everything.

I loved..loved..loved this book because not only did it help me understand the book of Revelations better but it also clarified some of the dreams that I had as a baby Christian. This is a power filled book. A must read!

***SPOILERS FOR THE PREVIOUS BOOKS*** "From this day on..." His voice went even softer, but I still heard it as though he whispered it into my ear. "I am yours.” Okay. That's it. I officially LOVE this series. Just... wow. I really enjoyed the first two books, but this one was just on another level for me. AMAZING. :) “I learned long ago that you don't get in the middle of a lover's spat. Nothing EVER goes as planned - People fall in love with the wrong person, someone ends up with a donkey head and then its a whole big mess." So the book starts out right where the last one left off, with Ash & Meghan banished from the Nevernever. I can say that the beginning was just a little bit slow, but it picked up very quickly and never stopped. A few new minor characters were introduced, Razor & the Clockmaker being my favorites, and of course the old favorites were back too. Grimalkin ftw. ;) "Be quiet, Goodfellow," Ash growled, peering into the shadows with narrowed eyes. “We’re not alone.” “Yeah? How do you figure that, prince? I don’t see anyone.” “The cait sith has disappeared.” “...Crap.” I really loved Meghan's transformation over the series. She's pretty butt-kickin awesome in this book, and I love that she stands up for herself, and doesn't always need someone protecting her. It was realistic too though; She isn't just an amazing sword fighter after a day, and stills needs help at times, help that she's not too proud to ask for. Pretty much the perfect balance. I've read about characters that are way too wimpy and others who won't accept help unless they're dying. "My, aren't we bossy today. Give a girl an army and it goes straight to her head." Ash and Meghan were, of course, heart-melting (well Ash makes my heart melt at least) and my unrealistic standards for real boys were once again raised heh. I also like how the Puck and Meghan situation from the previous book wasn't just forgotten. Puck's understandably angry, and there's a bit of a blowout (which I think Meghan deserved), but Puck's just as funny and awesome as always. "So, either you say, 'Sure, I'd love to have you along,' or you have a big bird dropping things on your head the whole trip." The last few chapters of the book just had me hanging on for dear life. The false king - I never would have guessed who he turned out to be. It was one of those twists where you're just completely surprised, but looking back, you wonder how you didn't see it from the beginning. LOVED it. “You enjoy making my heart stop, don't you?” I teared up a couple times near the end, and even shed a few tears, which is unusual for me. The last chapters shot the book up another half star or so for me. The end is bittersweet, and I absolutely loved it that way. I'm a sucker for pain and star-crossed lovers & unresolved crap. :) I can't wait to read the next one! "If I have to chase your soul to the ends of eternity, I won't stop until I find you, I promise."

I'll give this one 3.5 stars. The first half of the book did not really grab my attention, but the last half got better. Of course, this is the first book in the line of a long series. Of course, it ends with a cliffhanger, or at least a teaser for the next book. I am interested enough to read the 2nd one and see how it goes. There were some interesting topics: Slavery, unrest/revolt of the enslaved, the impact of having or using a destructive weapon, facing problems by fighting or by using your mind. Anyway, it gave me some things to think about.
