So, it's 1942, and World War II is in progress, with all its strife and misery...when reptiles from another planet attack!! This is the premise of Harry Turtledove's alternate history series that begins with this book. I read this for my book club. While it was not really my cup of tea, there were definitely good things about it. At times I would get curious about whether something was a real event or not and look up some history, so I learned some things while reading. I will not go into detail about the plot. As you might imagine, the warring people of Earth have to determine how much to trust one another in the face of an alien invasion and how to fight the aliens' superior technology. Meanwhile, the aliens were expecting a much easier conquest of Earth. Their society is traditional and methodical to a fault, and they experience problems due to the human ability to change and innovate rapidly. Turtledove shifts between the perspectives of many characters in this book, both human and reptile-alien. A few characters are decision-makers, but most are Everyman-type soldiers and civilians. There are characters from many of the major Axis and Allies countries as well as various aliens. This narrative style makes the pace slow (you may not see the same character for 50 pages or more, so it took me maybe 200 pages to get into it). However, following so many perspectives allows readers to understand the motivations and struggles of the diverse characters. I even found myself feeling sympathy for some of the aliens, especially Ussmak. That said, I could not always take the aliens seriously. I thought their inflated formal language was kind of funny...just couldn't help it. I wonder if anyone else thought the aliens were at least a little funny?

Didn't realize this was a crime drama/thriller (I'm not sure what the category is) but once I started reading I was hooked and had to find out what happens in the end. Lots of bad language and some violence.

What can I say, I LOVE this series. Book 3 takes us to the Fading Lands and we learn more about the Fey ways and the Tairen. Ellie has accepted her magic and is learning to use it, while the Elden mage is trying harder to control her (and her magic). I don't think it moves forward at quite the pace the first two books did, but there's still a lot of action and focus on the romance growing between Rain & Ellie. Wilson does such a great job at building this new world and making her characters seem so real, that it feels like you are right there with them. Definitely a must read (although make sure to read them in order of the series)!

Well, it was Pride and Prejudice. It was interesting to read the original and then compare it to some of the media productions of it. I like knowing which comes from the real story and which are the directors additions.

At times hard to read (had to skip the dentist part) but riveting. I don't care if parts were embellished or made up; still good writing.

A highly addictive series...The first book was by far the best but all the books really stand alone in their stories. On the one hand, you want the happy ending but on the other, you want it to be realistic. It ended up a little more tragic than I would have liked but what fun to read.
