I don't know how to feel about this one. The glamorized incest aspects of the book are revolting. But they're at odds with a basic storyline that is engaging. I would continue with the series, but a whole lot of this book left such a bad taste in my mouth that I don't know if I'm even interested.

Two-fisted, pulp-fiction fun for adventurous lads! Alan Moore can stop you in your tracks and make you rethink what comic books are capable of (Watchmen, From Hell), or he can just spin a darn good yarn, as he does here. Chock full of more literate, Victorian references than you can shake a stick at, the story is fun if you don't get them, double so when you do.

This book was okay. I didn't like how they shoved religion down the main character's throat. I felt that they were not normal people living their religion, but that they were making a point to show it at every point! I did like the love story

A very difficult book. In his telling of a story in which a plague of blindness descends upon the world, Jose Saramago is unrelenting. He follows the story of the first people to suffer not only unexplainable blindness, but the ensuing consequences as they are quarantined in an asylum. The asylum becomes a microcosm of the world as it falls into anarchy and despair. Unrelenting, unrelenting, unrelenting. It is a remarkable piece of writing. I was left shaken, with more questions than answers. At its root is an invented scenario which, in the hands of a lesser writer, would have come across as a cheap and obvious contrivance. I am still not sure what to make of it. But it was an unusual journey.
