Fascinating look at an early Ernest Hemingway. An artful, bohemian life in Paris in the early 20th century was just as I could have imagined. Especially enjoyed how the women were starting to assert themselves and how Hemingway's first wife struggled with more traditional roles in such an environment. You definitely got the sense of how living with Hemingway would go on to be bigger than life.

I have read this book once. It will take at least two more reading before I can absorb everything I want from it. If you are into this kind of stuff, particularly with all the "Through the wormhole" etc., etc., a read like this is good information. As to where you can use that information, well, where can you use the info about Winston Churchill except in conversation. Just the self satisfaction of having acquired the knowledge in a world changing faster than we can possibly keep up. Roger Penrose is great!

As soon as I finished it, I wanted to turn back to page 1 and start again.

i randomly came across this at the library, and decided to read it just to see if ethan hawke can actually write. his characters are relatively well-drawn, but it's a pretty typical 20-somethings who don't know what to do with themselves kind of book. not particularly engaging.

Why do governments fail to deliver on promises of change? Not because of inadequate funding, as most civil servants will whine, but rather because of failures of organization. So says Sir Michael, who has written an overly long but nevertheless charming (truly) account of his tenure as Blair's point person on change. Would that Sir Micheal could serve our new prez, who seems destined to fail on his domestic agenda for exactly the reasons laid out in this book: institutional inertia; cynicism; fear of change that leads to watered-down applications; to say nothing of bad ideas and ineptitude. My personal favorite barrier to change is the annoying need for consensus building--which simply takes too much time (years, in most cases)--rather than professionals simply accepting imposed ideas "no matter how good" (p. 166). Barber refers to this tendency as "assisted wheel reinvention," when professionals insist on discovering new practices for themselves rather than accepting best practices that have been identified and handed down. (I am surprised to learn this is a problem in the UK; I assumed anti-authorianism a distinctly American trait. Clearly, consumer culture has done its work....) In the District of Columbia, we are living with the consequences of a culture of consensus run amuck as the teachers' union--in the city with the worst school scores in the nation--refuses to accept very good new ideas simply because they were not "consulted". Sir Michael is dead-right about nearly every problem he describes in this book and has marvelously sensible ideas about organizational culture. But would that the book were half as long...at 465 pages, I can't imagine anyone will want to read it. But you should.
The beginning was a bit mushey.... but as I got into it the book was really good!
This book is obviously a children's book--but you should read it anyway. HIGH-larious.

Five days after finishing this book, I'm almost starting to forget what it's about. Not that it was bad or anything, I just have a bad memory I think. So anyway, let's see what I remember... *I remember that everyone had a cool name(especially Radar) *That it reminded me of An Abundance of Katherines and Looking for Alaska. *That Q(the main character) reminded me of the guys in John Green's aforementioned books. *It had a sucky ending. *I liked Looking for Alaska better. But I think I liked it better than An Abundance of Katherines. *Q was awesome. And so were his friends. Especially Radar. *Stupid Margo, reminded me of the stupid girls in the aforementioned books. (Alaska, and what's that girl's name in 'Abundance...' *Last, I wish that it would have a bit more um....I don't know. Romantic isn't the word. But I don't know. I kinda wish that it had more....hmm. I don't know. But anyway, basically, it was a pretty good book but i don't think it was awesome or anything. I mean, it's pretty middlish(if that's a word). Oh, but the title was awesome! :)
