The story describes the writer's intense feelings and unorthodox attitudes towards a sophisticated yet decaying society. It starts with a paternal love towards an abandoned boy whose calamity attracts a noble English man. Instead of submitting the child to a church, the man takes the boy to his house and elevates him to the level of a natural offspring and thus arouses his own biological son's jealousy. A totally unknown love develops between the boy and the sole girl of the house which is narrated in a third voice. Given the author's background and her inability to pull herself out of a circle which knows no ending to the banality of a rural life, one wonders and is fascinated, indeed, how she produces one of the most fascinating fictions ever written in English. The author reminds us that love can not be compromised with personal comfort and capricious behaviors. You can not eat your cake and have it. Although Catherine is in deep love with the originally abandoned and philanthropically adopted boy, she flirts with a wealthy boy whose social status satisfies her unexpressed need for external acceptance. Unsuccessful marriages, we are constantly reminded, ruin the lives of all parties involved. Personal feelings must be controlled and brought under noble values if life is to be shared with others. Indirectly, the author emphasizes the religious principle of staying within marital boundaries once a faithful vow is being taken.

Kid goes to hogwarts, has friends from the secret history, together they go to narnia. Or something like that. Ended up so annoyed by how author did non- male characters. Upon reflection, any one of supporting cast would have been more compelling
An interesting read, but ultimately it seemed like a really long magazine feature stretched into a book... too repetitive, and focused on just one game

I truly enjoyed this book. It is easier to believe how such a young man could have become President when one sees how incredibly insightful and introspective he already was when he wrote this book, at age 33. His life has been fascinating and I highly recommend this book. It is split roughly in thirds, with the first section talking about his childhood in Indonesia and Hawaii and his mother's side of the family, the middle third about his years as a community organizer in Chicago, right out of college (this section gave me a new understanding of race relations in the US that I really appreciated), and the last third telling of his first trip to Kenya to meet his relatives there and search for answers about his by-then-dead father. A very worthwhile read that has just enough depth to leave you wanting more. I was a bit thrown off by the fact that the narrative jumps around in a way that is hard to keep up with, especially if you're not reading the book in one sitting, but occasionally, a gorgeous passage will startle the reader, making up for the slight confusion. Also, a family tree would have been incredibly helpful, as keeping the generations and numbers of wives straight was a bit tough for me. Mostly, I am just beyond thrilled that someone who has dealt with so many issues of identity and deeply understands so many diverse groups of people through his own experience is President. His emotional intelligence is amazing.

Rubenfeld did a marvelous job at interweaving fact with fiction in this intricate tale. The players were hard to keep straight, but the personal stories of the two main characters kept me interested and eager to get to the end. The way he jumped back and forth between their lives made for a very fast paced book. I enjoyed the European jaunts, gave the book a bit of a Dan Brown feel. I was very glad Rubenfeld clarified the details at the end of the book.

Pacing was a bit slow in the beginning, and didn't pick up all that much throughout the rest of the story. It was also a little tiring having to wait till the last quarter of the book or less to find out the "deep dark secret," despite older readers being able to deduce the secret on their own early on. However, overall an enjoyable read.

I love the concept and it is exactly what you would expect it to be - I particularly loved that the Bennet girls were such bad-ass fighters - however it is basically the same joke for the whole book. Overall it's fun and amusing but it gets a little old midway through.

i've always been strangely fascinated by neuroscience in general, and this book does a pretty good job of balancing curious facts and anecdotes and with hard science. maybe there's a little too much hard science (or maybe i'm not that smart!) but i've read this twice now and there are still some portions that are too technical for me to easily wrap my own head around... still, as a sort of "primer" regarding the inner-workings of the brain (and the broader subject of human consciousness), i've not yet encountered a better book.
Bien escrito, fantasía de cambio de página con un poco de romance. Inventivo ... no puedo esperar para leer el próximo de la serie.
