Easily in my top 3 of all time. This novel is remarkable and by far the best thing released in the last twenty years. Color comes at you from the pages so hard it leaves knuckle marks on your face. Chabon is sickeningly gifted and the envy of anyone who wishes to write. These characters seep into your skin, you can practically hear them breathing in your ear as you read, they are so alive; his metaphors border on ingenious, his storytelling is masterful. Read this book.

A humorous guide to the underbelly of one of the quirkiest metropolises: Portland, Oregon. It serves as a literary reaffirmation of why I refuse to leave this fabulous, albeit odd, city.

I really enjoyed this interpretation of Rapunzel and totally recommend it as a middle grade graphic novel. Fans of the format will enjoy the story and it's a great introduction for new or reluctant graphic novel readers. Rapunzel's Revenge is told from the perspective of Rapunzel and she is, by far, the most developed character. Mother Gothel, the witch who adopts Rapunzel, has some pretty amazing powers. She can grow or dry up huge amounts of land. She charges people living in the land enormous taxes and maintains a huge slave labor camp. Mother Gothel raised Rapunzel, but facing an older and willful teen, sends her to live in an enormous tree. Rapunzel escapes from the tree by using her incredibly lengthy red braids and this is when the action in the story really picks up. She meets Jack and the two of them make their way through the desert, determined to defeat Mother Gothel and save Rapunzel's mother from the slave labor camp she's been stuck in for years. The story ultimately ends happily for everyone but Mother Gothel. I can't wait to read the sequel, Calamity Jack. I am not much of a graphic novel fan but even I really enjoyed this one. The artwork was well done and I appreciated that the colors were not dark or depressing. The action starts off a bit slow but picks up a lot to create an exciting, satisfying story.

I've never really enjoyed science fiction, but maybe I just wasn't reading the good stuff. Parable of the Talents was published in 1998, but 2009 is a particularly appropriate time to read it (pre-election 2008 would probably have been the best time, but that would have scared me a bit too much). Frightening, very creative, rich language, plus it features a strong female as the main character-which I love to see.

I enjoyed this memoir of Helene Cooper's growing up years in Liberia and adult life as a reporter in the US. It was written in a very no-nonsense down-to-earth style and very readable. It took a little bit to get used to the Liberian-style English she spoke as a child at first. I honestly didn't know much about Liberia prior to reading this book so I did find the little snippets of Liberian history/background info as well as the lifestyle/culture interesting.

More like 3.5 stars. There are things about this book that I really liked and things that really bothered me. The beginning was great. The ending was definitely setting up for book two, and I knew who the bad guy was instantly which is always a bummer. Mostly the thing that bothered me was how she refered to her father as "Daddy" EVERY time she talked about him. Every time. That's just not realistic to me. But as the editors didn't have Revis change it I may be in the minority...

This is a wonderful and I love watching my four year old niece read it. The first time she read it, her eyes got big every time she got to read BAAAAAROOOOM! I think it is definitely a book every young child should be exposed to because sometimes we are an over puritanical society and HELLO! WE ALL PASS GAS!
