I read this book when I was in the third grade and I still remember it so vividly. It was fluid and clever and funny and I loved it. One of the first books that made me truly love to read. I wish I could kiss my elbow!

Such an interesting view on death and heaven. A very light story even though it was dealing with a hard topic.

I love this book and can personally relate to it. In this book, Chrysanthemum begins the story loving her name but when she starts school, the other kids tease her about how long her name is. By the end of the story, the teacher loves Chrysanthemum's name so much that she decides to give her baby that name. The kids follow suit. This book can be good for pre-k through 1st grade. A lot of math games can be derived from this book. Children can count the letters in their name using manipulatives and can also compare and contrast the number of letters in their name to that of their classmates. Students can also make a class bar graph of how many letters people have in their name. Another idea is to have students graph the most frequently used letters in the classroom names.

Of course all baby-care books want you to think their way is best, but this one is excessively condescending to anyone who does things a different way from her recommendations. I've found, since each baby and parent is different, that you need a variety of perspectives on parenting. But I couldn't stomach the way she insulted everyone who doesn't follow her advice. My rating is no stars.

With all the hype about this book, I really wanted it to be great. But the unfortunate truth is, I just didn't care about the main characters. The writing wasn't bad, and the plot wanted to be exciting, but Tris was . . . forgettable. (view spoiler) I wanted to quit halfway through, but I'd already put in the time and I did want to see how it turned out. I think I'll skip the rest of the series, though.

Hmmm, what did I think about this book. I enjoyed it, but it is a tough subject to read about....that is for sure.

Very interesting descriptions of human nature. I knew pretty much nothing about the story when I started reading it, and at the beginning I never dreamed it would end the way it did. Of course it was brilliant. 5/17/07 - I've only just begun Part Three (1/3 through the book). I'm really enjoying the character descriptions. 9/2007 - I finally finished! I can see why people's eyes bugged out when I told them I was reading this. It's not that it's a difficult read, it's just that it's really, really long. Levin was my favorite. I wasn't really expecting the book to end that way until I got closer to the end. Very interesting.
