I can't quite pinpoint it, but I really enjoyed this book. Major Pettigrew was a delight, with the perfect balance of an old-fashioned, set-in-his ways, yet good-natured demeanor about him. He tries so hard to follow traditions and behave honorably, while those around him fail miserably. His sister-in-law, her daughter and his own son are perfect examples of complete assholes (for lack of a better term). All they seem to value is money and they constantly mistake the Major's wit and integrity for crotchety-ness. The townsfolk are completely racist and snobby (although they would never admit it), and the blossoming relationship between the Major and his new Pakistani friend is quite the scandal. Then there's Mrs. Ali, who was also quite delightful in her subtlety charming nature and the chemistry of her with the Major was so much fun to see slowly unfold. Not to mention, his interactions with her family and friends was very interesting. Overall, the story was character-based, rather than plot-based and I think Simonson hit the nail on the head with her two main characters. Major Pettigrew and Mrs. Ali were ingeniously written, completely believable, and extremely likeable.

The First great Twain travel novel. The author makes fun of a bunch American tourists who travel through the Holy Land and the Near East in 1869. A must for Twain lovers and people interested in that region.

** spoiler alert ** A wonderfully ambitious science fiction novel; the author boldly attempts to imagine what it would be like to meet an emissary from an alien culture that was both technologically, and, more interestingly, morally, far superior to our own. The first problem to tackle when structuring the narrative is, of course, that such a person would be beyond our comprehension. I approved of the solution chosen: the novel is recounted by multiple narrators, whose conflicting testimonies show that all of them are more or less unreliable. We thus have no more than confused echoes of the story. This is, paradoxically, more convincing than a direct telling, which could only have been disappointing. This moved along very quickly and I liked Zusak's writing. The story kept me reading, but I have to say I had hoped the ending was different. Everything to that point was great.

This is a good book about 10 different men who fought in the War. I have heard some of the stories before, but they were all good. Each man earned the Congressional Medal of Honor.

This is a pretty poor translation; obviously, I'm not sympathetic to translating verse into prose.

Another fun Junie B. Jones book, this one perfect for Easter. While we skipped to read this one out of sequence, our girls enjoyed the book very much and we are a little sad that this is the last in the series.
