Ok, it's sentimental as shit, but what of it? It can't be called "sports writing" per se -- rather, it's just great writing about baseball. By the time it's over, you'll feel like the Dodgers are your hometown team.

The premise is interesting and fun: A young man bonds to a wolf and becomes part of a human/wolf pack. The man and wolf have a psychic bond, but it is not all sparkly rainbows. The execution is disappointing. The writing tries for a literary style but ends up confusing and ugly. For example, this quote from the first paragraph: "Njall was sixteen, almost a man even if he was hoping for just one more spurt of growth, but her head was as broad as the span of his palm between her eyes." Whut? The novel is full of complicated names that closely resemble each other, change frequently, and are introduced then dropped. I had a hard time keeping track of characters. The book includes a lot of graphic non-consensual sex (I would certainly consider it non-consensual), but I felt the ramifications of it were not explored well. In short: GREAT ideas, bad execution.

Funny and gross
Read this sucker (pun intended) in one day; Earmarks of Ira Levin's classic Rosemary's Baby all over this novel, but guess what? This novel is just that: novel. In it's approach, build-up, character development, setting, subtle thrills and surreal paranoid aura, this novel is one to sink your teeth into as you lay in bed reading trying not to let those dang bedbugs bite!

Tons of great ideas for saving money at the grocery store and at home.

The highlight of this book for me is the descriptive prose. Evie Wyld has a real talent for using fresh language and images, and it shines through from the first page to the last. The story is about traumatised men who bottle up their emotions and fail to communicate, and it's well told, as we alternate between rageful Frank in the present day and his father Leon growing up and going through the Vietnam War. Much of the force that drives the novel on is discovering the reasons for Frank's anger and particularly for his hatred of his father, but this is never really resolved satisfactorily. It's consistent with the characters that nothing really gets openly expressed, but it left me feeling a bit disappointed at the end. I'd still recommend this book for the luminous prose and the deft handling of compelling themes, but just don't expect all the strands to be pulled together perfectly.

This is really a 3.5 but can't figure out if we can do that. I have not read book 1 for the story of Lori but I did enjoy this one and felt like I was able to read it as a stand alone book. I loved the story line as I can somewhat relate to Sarah’s character. She has a lot of the self doubts that I have had myself and I can understand why sometimes she seemed to sabotage her relationship with Matt. The one thing I did not like about the characters is how money never seemed to be an issue. Seemed like Matt was able to get whatever money he needed from his dad and even Sarah mentioned something about her parents being upset with their credit card bill after she ordered Matt’s Christmas gift. Sometimes I felt like telling them to get a job. LOL. I have to say though even if the focus of the story was Matt and Sarah I think Mike was my favorite character. He just seemed so loveable and an all around good guy. While the story line was great I felt the book could have been condensed a little and about half way through the book I was surprised I still had another half to read as it seemed like the story could have ended right there. I am glad I kept reading though. Once Matt and Sarah make their move to another state I really got back into the story. Overall this was a really interesting book and I can’t wait to read the other books in the series.

It wasn't bad. I finished it. I thought about quitting but then there would be a really interesting or moving part. If it is fiction a main character should not have the same name as the author. Is that old-fashioned? If you only have enough material for a long short story then maybe that is what you should write. Or something.
