** spoiler alert ** I have to sadly admit that A Pair of Blue Eyes--Hardy's third novel--was not as tragic as what I've come to expect in Hardy's work. In all fairness, it doesn't mean the story is not worthwhile. I still really, really liked it. The story is about Elfride (a young girl, a writer, who is in love with being in love) and she makes a couple rookie mistakes. First off, she leads on her first love interest Felix Jethrop who then eventually dies. His mother never forgives Elfride for rejecting her beloved son. His mother plays a crucial part in trying to destroy Elfride's happiness for the rest of the novel. Elfride then falls in love with young, cute Stephen Smith. Smith comes from poor parents who live in the village but is trying to work his way up in the world as an architect. Elfride's father keeps Elfride from being with him on the idea that she needed to marry up, not down. She runs away and nearly marries Stephen but decides against it at the last minute. In those days, it was quite scandalous to leave one day and return the next unsurpervised with a "lover." Mrs. Jethrop is the only person who witnesses this account. So when Harry Knight finally comes along, this time I think Elfride really is in love with him. She falls hard and loses herself in the him. I especially like the way they met--with him being a book reviewer and having written a particularly scathing review on her novel. Turns out, he's related to the woman Elfride's father marries. This novel includes the first literal "cliff hanger" when Knight falls from a cliff overlooking the ocean and is literally hanging until Elfride creates a rope out of knotting together her underclothes and pulls him to safety. I have to admit that I find these male characters who prize complete purity (and nothing else will do) in their love objects ridiculous. To me, when Knight found out about Elfride's engagement before him was almost identical to the scenario that would have played out in Tess of the d'Ubervilles had Tess told Angel about her previous life. It was interesting to see the way these similar scenarios worked out when handled differently, neither turned out how Tess or Elfride would have wanted. But what surprised me here was that the ending wasn't what I would call Hardy's typical tragedy. Elfride married and she seemed somewhat happy. Her life wasn't ruined with her being left by Knight. She married up, as her father wanted, and she was a good mother to Lord Luxellian's two small girls and he loved her dearly. Although this ending wasn't what I expected, I enjoyed reading this book.
