Very James Michener-esque in that the historical, geographical and cultural background of the characters and the times they lived in...are detailed and engaging as much as the human stories that weave these together. Loved it...

I appreciated the step-by-step pictures. Many of the recipes are a little too fancy for me, but the ones I have tried were simple.

Isn't the cover enough to tell you what's wrong with this book? The only comparably egotistic book cover I've ever seen is the one for the newer editions of Donald Davidson's Inquiries into Truth and Interpretation where Davidson looks like a philosophy ghost come to impart some knowledge onto the world. But as far as I know they designed this cover after Davidson died, so he couldn't possibly have approved it. Wish we could say the same for Searle's cover....

I loved this book. I'd never heard of the author but it was featured on Audible so I gave it a chance, and now I can't wait to check out other things by Allen.

Not much seems to happen in this second book in terms of advancing the overall arch of the series plot line. It's a fun adventure mystery, but it seems that the novelty and even the humor of the first book is wearing off a little. Let's put it this way... after reading the first book, I rushed to get the second book; after reading the second book, I am lazily making my way to the third book (if I even decide to read it).

The Wheel of Time series starts with a glowing story, depicted in The Eye of the World, but then really starts to drag. I had a difficult time focusing while reading The Shadow Rising, book 4 in this series. I am starting to get the idea that each book introduces a prophecy that Rand al'Thor needs to fulfill, and he cuts a path through Trollocs, Myrdraal, and the Foresaken to arrive at the fulfillment thereof. The last few books seem to have been detours from the actual story that end nearly in the same place as where they started. Despite not making huge strides in his story, Jordan does succeed in introducing the Aiel culture more fully. Book 1 seems to follow many parallels to The Lord of the Rings. In subsequent books I see more and more similarities to Dune, by Frank Herbert. Jordan's Aiel are for all intents and purposes Herbert's Freman. Also, Jordan's Aes Sedai are very similar to Herbert's Bene Gesserit. Finally, Jordan's Dragon Reborn, the male Aes Sedai, is similar to Herbert's Kwisatz Haderach, the male Bene Gesserit. My opinion after reading both strories is that Jordan's story pales in comparison to Herbert's. I can see the appeal that The Shadow Rising holds for many people, but I think this series is really starting to drag. I definitely need to take a good break before continuing the series. I do intend on continuing, though. If you liked this book, Dune by Frank Herbert will knock your socks off. I can't talk it up enough.

This is one of those amazing books that NO ONE has read, and it's an absolute shame. Sachs is a friend of the anthropology chair at UC Berkeley, and in taking her class freshman year we all were required to read it. Albie Sachs is a lawyer on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa, a court that deals with the acts if apartheid in a unique way. Anyone can come before the TRC and essentially 'confess' their acts, and in return they will not be charged. It's been surprisingly effective in healing the wounds of apartheid in the country. Sachs worked closely with the ANC and Mandela, and in 1988 was the victim of a car bomb in Mozambique. He wakes up to find he has lost his arm and vision in one of his eyes. What follows is an incredibly moving story of his physical recovery from injuries, while around him apartheid is being dismantled and the country must begin to emotionally heal from its injuries. Sachs came to speak at Berkeley a year later, and he's a remarkable man, a true hero who's story will likely go unnoticed by most. SUCH a good book.

It was a well-written biography, but some parts were sort of confusing because there were many different people in Jacqueline's life, and sometimes I forgot who was who. The end was abrupt. Reading this book helped me realize that although Jacqueline DuPre was amazing at cello, she was only human. Being a child prodigy made her feel isolated and different from everybody else, and she wanted to be loved for who she was and not just for being famous. Even though I often wish I was really amazing at cello, I realize that being an ordinary person is probably a good thing.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. I got about 2/3 of the way through had to put it down so I could read the book for book group. When I did pick it up again, I found I didn't really want to continue reading it. I didn't really care what happened next. I think part of the problem I had with the book is that I couldn't really relate to the characters. They were self-centered and only seemed to care about drinking, drugs and who was buggering whom.

Like watching paint dry -SHRUG- or swimming in quick sand -SHRUG- Slow developing. Characters love to shrug in this story. It's annoying. This book was tough to get through, and I so wanted it to get better somewhere. It picked up just a tad about 75% of the way through. It has such flat one dimensional characters I expected a twist from someone somewhere. Nope. Sex scenes seemed to be gratuiously thrown in more of a wham, bam thank ya maam way, but then tries to play off to be some deep relationship. From a female's viewpoint "I'm like yah right! - so annoying.
