I first read Sappho's fragments as an undergraduate, and was deeply moved by the depth of her imagery, the deep wells of passion that she expresses.

A very dense book to get through. It was rare that I could follow what Kline was doing, but when I did catch a glimpse, it was great stuff. "Christology...proclaims the name of Jesus, the Lord of the covenant, revealing him as God present with his people, the primary reality of God's covenant relationship to man, and as Savior of his people, the central reality of the redemptive covenant relationship."

Fucked up. Eye opening.

I was poised to really like this book, given that it's alternate history set in Alaska... but I was mostly disappointed. It really didn't have much Alaska-ness to it (although maybe if I'd been to Sitka I'd feel differently), and it was really just a mystery, and didn't have much focus on the alternate history nature of the setup. And it took over half the book to even figure out that it was primarily a mystery. I just wasn't that into it.

A fascinating look at the post-WW1 decade and the people, trends, and philosophies that helped to "modernize" America.

Good book. I'm a fan of the historical tie-ins.
Yeah. Weird. As you might imagine from the title. The title story is, uh, bizarre? Some of the others, though, were really engaging, thoughtful social commentary. "Commuter Army" and "The Last Smoker," in particular. Others were flat out silly, like "The Dabba Dabba Tree." And I'm not quite sure where Tsutsui was going with "The World Is Tilting," but I don't think he got there. Still. Short stories. From Japan. A worthwhile diversion.
