The Underneath is more than a story about an old hound and "his" cats. It's a story about the power of love and the destructive nature of hate. It's a story about the power of choices and the generational consequences that ensue. A story for all ages. Two quotes that stuck out to me: "Anger has its own hue, its own dark shade that coats everything with a thin, brittle veneer." And my favorite, "... gratitude and longing, the twin ingredients of every prayer." note to parents: children who are sensitive about the abuse of animals may need parental guidance, or perhaps wait til their older to read this book

This was one of those books that got added to my list because it had a "buzz" around it, but that I didn't really know anything about, or have a real enthusiasm for. I'm glad to say that it was totally worth it. Sarah Vowell's criss-crossing of America to search out and examine the minutiae of our three Presidential assassinations is wonderfully educational, but mostly HILARIOUS. Vowell's writing style is the perfect mix of dry and overt for me. Come on, how can you not love someone that refers to Robert Todd Lincoln as "Jinxy McDeath"?

Re-reading this favorite of mine.... Amanda Ward does such a good job of weaving together three characters' stories into one. This book is truly heart-wrenching, even when ancillary characters are discussed. A totally unique premise and extremely engaging.

Elseworlds tale with Batgirl and Robin as vigilante dynamic duo. Jim Gordon wants them tracked down, so he assigns his best office: Detective Bruce Wayne. Striking painted art and compelling story set in 1960s Gotham City.

Sort of research-y and not all that fun to read.

I don't know if the official Goodreads label for four stars ("I liked it") fits this book. It's not something you like or really enjoy, unless one actually enjoys short novels about rape and torture. So, replace "I liked it" with "It was well-constructed and culturally important enough to warrant more than the one star recommendation for dislike". I disliked it. It was brilliant. I don't recommend it. Go read it.
