Even if the associations these gentlemen make turn out to be specious, I thank them for making the associations. New things always come from shaking up the establishment. It certainly makes for fun "what ifs"!

Studying James with my wife. Full of practical wisdom.

So satisfying! This is my favorite of his books (so far).

I liked many things about this book. I liked the depiction of the characters (if not the characters themselves - Dex ... what a loser!), I liked the concept of looking at a relationship over the course of 20 years by choosing one day, and I liked the writing. But somehow it didn't really come together for me. The ending, which I think was meant to be really moving, failed to move me. And ultimately I was disappointed that Dex didn't ever really man-up (sorry if that's a spoiler).

This is one big honkin' book--634 pages. One of the blurbs on the cover states that reading it seemed to take three seconds. Well, I'm not going to go that far, but it sure didn't seem like 634 pages. Tightly plotted, nothing seems extraneous in building to the climax where the deeply embedded informant is in prison where he is "dead man," trying to survive threats within and threats from without. The book pits a middle-aged, dogged police inspector not just against his prey, but also against his own organization and government.

Lyrical, poetic and typically Gail Jones, this book is rich with imagery and many layers of meaning. Alice is not Jones' finest character, but her story is beautifully crafted and explores notions of self and modernity in captivating prose.

Fantastic read - if you like Jane Austen, you will enjoy this.
They really TRY to make it sound simple. I don't like to cook anyway, so I don't really like cookbooks to begin with. However, I still plan on buying this, just to have it on hand. I just wish it was a tad easier, maybe it won't be so bad once I get into this lifestyle and start caring about what I eat.

Wow! Very long book however. You'll spend a week on this for sure. A History of the Middle Ages is the amazing story of European man in transition. It is a dramatic chronicle of 1,000 years of political, social, and economic transformation beginning with the dissolution of the classical Mediterranean civilization and ending with the first flowering of the Renaissance. It is also the story of two new religions, Christianity and Islam, both of which were destined to dominate the mind of every person in those new civilizations arising in their wake. This was the great Age of Faith, a time of darkness and a time of enlightenment...a time of lords and vassals, popes and kings, and commerce and cathedrals.
