Lexie is a gal who receives a bump on the head and has forgotten the last three years of her life. At first, everyone gives her their version but it is up to her to figure out what really went on during that time. I really enjoyed this. I would waver between 3.5 and 4 stars if I could. I thought the beginning was a bit slow with a bit of wingeing about...but I expected a completely different ending and was pleasantly surprised.

Nick and his brother Alan are fleeing from a group of magicians who want to steal a necklace from their mother. Which they can't let her have or she will die. I thought this book was interesting not so much for the plot which at times felt like something I had read before but for how when I finished it really made me think about what makes up a person's humanity. It's really I guess about the choices you make. I think this book would be especially interesting for young people.

This review is not meant to slag off the book. Im no connoisseur when it comes to literature but i dont understand why this book is being given so much importance & even won the Pulitzer prize. For one thing, a novel written in the 60's about racial-discrimination doesnt warrant it to be a classic. The story is very run-of-the-mill & i think there are loads of unheard books out there which deserve recognition better than this book. Not a bad novel but definitely not in my 1001-must-read-books-before-you-die list (IMHO).

I'm not kidding when I say this book scared me to death. This is pretty much a blow-by-blow of how quickly civilization would unravel in any kind of emergency situation. I mean accountants becoming gang leaders. And real blind people one-upping all the fake blind people. Word.

I did enjoy the first book and the other 2 following, but am currently unable to get through the 4th of the series. I find the idea interesting and challenging for Christians reading the series, but it just seems to have stalled for me.

Gripping and horrifying.
just marvelous. loved reading this book.

Starting from the colonial period - an era from which world powers have never truly allowed Haiti to escape - Farmer draws upon his first-hand experiences well in putting together a compelling narrative of historic and contemporary "uses" of Haiti. Little has indeed changed since the U.S. refused to recognize Haiti's independence for the better part of a century, fearful of the "threat of a bad example" - a self-governing nation of peoples of African descent, and one that has been continuously frustrated from the outside in its attempts to strike a path of independent development.
