I read this book in high school and I'm pretty sure the messages I got from it set me on my adult life path.

This is a collection of three Finnish novellas by an author with anachronistic style and sensibilities. I was not convinced by her portrayal of Baltic Europe during the Renaissance (Kallas was greatly interested in Estonia, especially) as being mainly a hotbed for ignorance, cruelty and tragedy. However, her archaic tone and prose style are fascinating. Of the two novellas here that I read, I especially recommend her unique werewolf story: "The Wolf's Bride."

Written in very elusive Ray Bradbury style, it's a very interesting book. It's amazing that books like this lead to the conclusion that if you leave the masses uneducated, you hold all the power. It was a quick, deep-thought-provoking read. I liked it.
Excellent reference for the Spiritual Exercises ~ as close a literal translation of Ignatius' writing from 15th/16th century Spanish to English as I am aware. A note of caution ~ without taking the in the context and traditions of his time, expressions found in this book, like "The enemy conducts himself as a woman" can take on a completely distorted meaning ~ I have been told by various Ignatian spiritual directors that what he most likely meant was "The enemy conducts himself as a *disordered* woman." Not recommended for the average layperson except under the guidance of a spiritual director.

So far this book is good. It's written from the prospective of a guy who is kinda out there. The book keeps you wanting to know what is really going on and what is going to happen next.

A wonderful collection - this is a book I keep on my nightstand. You can read my full review of The Complete Collected Poems of Maya Angelou at: http://laurareviews.blogspot.com/2009...
HEE-LAR-EE-OUS. Old-timey pictures meet extreme dry wit. Subject: pregnancy. Fun to discuss at cocktail parties and student council meetings.

This wasn't my type of book. Not that it was bad, but I couldn't relate to the main character.
I kept reading this book and thinking that it was written specifically for me. The basic concept of a circus family that decides that they are going to purposely breed their own personal freak show was inviting enough, but it was the phenomenally developed characters that kept my interest. There is Arty (stage name: Aqua Boy), the megalomaniac with fins who starts a cult based on voluntary amputation. Siamese twins Elly and Iphy who discover that they can make more money peddling their flesh to men with exotic taste than they can singing and dancing. The young Chick who has anesthetic powers and the ability to move matter with his mind. And my favorite of all, our narrator, Oly, the hunchback albino dwarf who isn't quite special enough by her family’s standards to warrant her own act but would do anything to keep them together, even when the forces are beyond her control. I really loved this book and I would recommend it to just about everyone I know as long as they don't get queasy easily. My only complaint would be that it felt like the ending was a little rushed, but I might have felt this way because I didn't want to stop reading.
