What a BIG surprise! I bought this book mainly on the basis of its cover. It's cute! It looks kind of like a kids' book, about a big lovable dog. I was intrigued. Well, this is definitely NOT a kids book. After reading about 30 pages or so, I was tempted to give up on it. Since I had paid good money for it, though, and it was going to be a quick read, I decided to stick it out. And I am really glad I did! This is the story of Esther, a woman who is still grieving for her husband who died a few years ago, and Winston Churchill. It takes place over the course of a few days in July 1964. Mr. Chartwell, as he first introduces himself to Esther, is a big black dog. He soon encroaches upon her life. That is actually not his true name. He named himself that after Churchill's home. Churchill knows him as Black Pat, and has lived with this creature most of his life. The whole story was so intriguing I had to look up information about Churchill online to verify that some of the facts were true. (they were) anyway, the story was about depression, and how people handle it. I thought the ending was especially good and believable. My main problem with the book overall was that I just don't get British humor. I'm sure some of the odd things said were supposed to be funny, but they went over my head. I liked all the characters. Even though Black Pat wasn't exactly likable, he was oddly believable. this is definitely a story that will stay with me. Very well done about a difficult subject.
