This book was a good read...there's not a whole lot to say about it. Very good plot, good characters and an honest look at life.

I will start off this review by saying that this type of book is just NOT my cup of tea. I could only get about 100 pgs into it because of the violence that started early on. Reading about violence generally makes my skin crawl. :/ The writing overall was fairly well done. I felt that the story started adding too many factors in all at once. There needed to be a bit more plot & character development so that there was a solid background before one started adding all of the conflicts in. Plus, there were several different huge conflicts. It got a bit too implausible for me too quickly. Again I will say that I didn't read the whole thing and that this style of book is usually not my choice. So if this is your genre I would definitely recommend at least picking it up and flipping through it. :)

humorous, chick-litty, cute, maybe too cute, but I enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed this sweet book, full of longing -- longing to die, longing to find love, longing to be a better person, longing for a different past. The book was lovely. The characters are compelling and lovable. The book is a bit confusing, but the mystery is revealed at the end.

Emily Dickson, with the simplicity of her poetry, remains one of my favorite poets. "A word is dead, when it is said, Some say. I say it just Begins to live That day." Emily Dickinson

This was a good book with a little bit of fantasy mixed in with the real life issues of family members getting along and coming to terms with the decisions made in life. I thought this book was great!

What a BIG surprise! I bought this book mainly on the basis of its cover. It's cute! It looks kind of like a kids' book, about a big lovable dog. I was intrigued. Well, this is definitely NOT a kids book. After reading about 30 pages or so, I was tempted to give up on it. Since I had paid good money for it, though, and it was going to be a quick read, I decided to stick it out. And I am really glad I did! This is the story of Esther, a woman who is still grieving for her husband who died a few years ago, and Winston Churchill. It takes place over the course of a few days in July 1964. Mr. Chartwell, as he first introduces himself to Esther, is a big black dog. He soon encroaches upon her life. That is actually not his true name. He named himself that after Churchill's home. Churchill knows him as Black Pat, and has lived with this creature most of his life. The whole story was so intriguing I had to look up information about Churchill online to verify that some of the facts were true. (they were) anyway, the story was about depression, and how people handle it. I thought the ending was especially good and believable. My main problem with the book overall was that I just don't get British humor. I'm sure some of the odd things said were supposed to be funny, but they went over my head. I liked all the characters. Even though Black Pat wasn't exactly likable, he was oddly believable. this is definitely a story that will stay with me. Very well done about a difficult subject.
