I've come to the conclusion that every single book written by Augusten Burroughs is exactly the same. Exactly. It does make me feel a little bit better about my somewhat messed up life at times because his is my worst scenario multiplied by one hundred, but its still reading the same book over and over again. This one kind of bothered me because at times I felt so lost because he would jump from one thing to the next and sometimes there really wasn't a buffer or an explination. So I felt a little lost at times. The relationship between Augusten and his father was heartbreaking, to say the least. He talks about how hard he tried just to hug his father and he was rejected every single time, and so he took his fathers clothes and stuffed them with towels, just to get the feeling of being close to and hugged by his father. Heartbreaking.

Fabulous.
** spoiler alert ** Book 1 in the Bloodlines series (this is the first book in a spin-off series from Vampire Academy) Detailed Spoiler Summary: This series is going to be told in first person from Sydney’s point of view. Sydney is an Alchemist we had original met in Blood Promise. She got in big trouble with the Alchemists (including her dad) for helping to break Rose out of prison. She did it as a favor to Abe, which we learn at the end of the book was because she got his help getting revenge on her older sister’s (Carly’s) rapist (Keith Darnell). Abe had hired people to make it look like it was a Strigoi attack on Keith, however, during the battle Keith lost one of his eyes. Sydney is sent to Palm Springs to a boarding school, Amberwood, in order to keep princess Jill Dragomir safe. Because Lissa is Queen and she only remains queen because she has one other living member of her family- which is Jill. So the extremists Moroi are trying to remove Lissa from the throne by killing Jill. So, Jill is basically sent into hiding. With her at school are Eddie and Sydney (posing as brother and sister). Off campus Adrian is staying with a local Moroi, Clarence, an old senile man who believes that the Moroi killings in that area are vampire hunters (instead of Strigoi who just happen to be cutting people’s throats). Clarence’s son Lee also is around often. Jill is Spirit Bound to Adrian. During one of the attaches on Jill at court she actually died. Adrian saved her and now they have a bond just like what Lissa and Rose used to have. Eddie befriends Micah, who has a crush on Jill and who has an uncanny resemblance to his deceased dhampir friend Mason. Sydney notices metallic tattoos on the kids at school. Metallic tattoos have only been used by the Alchemists. So, she investigates and figures out that an Alchemist has been supplying the tattoo parlor. That would be- you guessed it- the jerk Keith. With Adrian’s help Sydney reports him to the Alchemists and he is “removed.” We don’t know what has happened to him. Lee and Jill fall in love, which is terrible because Lee dies. Lee is the “vampire hunter.” He used to be a Strigoi but was saved by a spirit user and he wants to try to be Strigoi again so he keeps killing different types of people. He is just about to kill Sydney to make him turn when he stops because her blood tastes funny. He stops and calls his Strigoi friends to come over and turn him and in return he promised to get them a dhampir (Eddie). The good thing is that through the bond Jill knows Adrian’s in danger and Eddie and Jill show up, but not before one of the Strigoi drains Lee and gives her his blood. It doesn’t work. Because Lee was saved by a spirit user from being a Strigoi he can no longer turn into one of them- he is immune. But, since all of his blood was drained he died. Eddie dispatches the two Strigoi with the help of Jill who uses her water vampire power to distract them. Sydney and Adrian got banged up pretty good, but they’ll heal. Sydney refuses Adrian’s help to heal her since magic scares her. So, in the end Sydney is going to stay on at Amberwood, Angeline Dawes (a Keeper) is going to be Jill’s roommate. Abe is the one who brought Angeline by. The Alchemists want to do more research with spirit users and the people who were brought back so Sonya Karp and Dimitri Belikov are in Palm Springs. Adrian moved into Keith’s old apartment because Sydney pulled some strings (since he’s willing to be a guinea pig for the Alchemists since he’s a spirit user). And Sydney realizes the teacher Ms. Terwilliger who she has been working with as a research aid knows all about magic, Alchemists, and vampires (the good and the bad ones). My opinions: First off, Sydney isn’t Rose. No one could live up to Rose’s character. Sydney is a little annoying with the fact that she was raised to hate vampires and hate vampire magic. So she is nervous and freaks out easily. Maybe annoying is too subtle a word for Sydney. She is also very passive throughout the first half of the book. However, near the end she seems to find her courage- except for vampire magic of course. But, with that said, this was a wonderfully written story with a terrific plot (or I should say plots, since there is more than one) and wonderful characters. It was nice to see Adrian again, who I’m sure is probably going to be Sydney’s love interest. And I’ve always like Eddie. He will probably be paired off with Jill. I am really looking forward to the next installment in the series. I really don’t think we have seen the last of Keith Darnell.

The movie of the same name is a love it or hate it, and some might say the same for the book. (I'm a big fan of both). The book takes a much different tack than the movie, and I would recommend it to any sci-fi/fantasy buff.
great book, very inspiring
Love this series!!!

read immediately following the choice and i liked this one as well. again, a daily dose of reality, a little more mystery than his others, but NOT a mystery novel, maybe malicious intent sounds better? but it was good.

An interesting look at museums, and the big antiquity acquisitions of the 70's and 80's.
No dust jacket

The first Agatha Christie I've read, aside from The Mousetrap, which I acted in in 10th grade. (I played the victim, which means I got to be a real bitch before getting strangled at the end of Act I. It was awesome.) This was a lot of fun—I realize I like the methodical clarity of the type of detective story where the inspector interviews all the suspects, and carefully pursues each new piece of evidence. There were also some very fun secondary characters in this, though man, was I surprised at the emphasis placed on various people from various nationalities hating each other. (There were reasons behind some of this, but honestly, a lot of it was just, "Jeeze, those fucking Italians!") I'm also puzzled by the common "well, I know you did it, but I am going to let you get away with it/not punish you in the traditional manner" wrap up of so many mystery stories. This happens often in the works of Arthur Conan Doyle and Dorothy L. Sayers...does no one ever get arrested? Y'all are conspiring to put ordinary policemen out of business, aren't you? But, tangents aside: this proved a very fun way to spend a couple hours; I'm looking forward to reading more.
