narrator not very likable (self-aggrandizing). just okay, and nowhere near as good as a civil action or even damages.

cuckoo-clock "Patchouli-scented breezes. Glycerine dews which never evaporate on lawns of waxed paper which never fade. Angels inside filmy skeins inflated with hydrogen floated through the cataracts of limelight, their soft hands waving aeolian harps from which there emerged like snow the rustle of Viennese waltzes and jolly military songs - in a word something for everybody."

i really only thought this book was okay, except i can't forget how convinced i was that i was reading the words of a woman the entire time. wally lamb totally nailed the female voice and perspective on this one, i particularly liked the bit about the goldfish in the sink. that's something my mother probably would have (or may have) done. i can't say exactly what is is about his writing style that grabs me, either. it isn't specifically feminine or even really epicene, but he really translates the experiences that many young women endure with such eloquence and understanding that i forgot several times that the book had been written by a man. however, i almost gave it two stars because he uses the words "bucking as i came" which is just gross. really, wally, we don't "buck" when we come. what the hell is that even supposed to mean? and he uses it more than once! i specifically remember (i read this book quite a few years ago, i think i was still in grade school, and i remember then being like "WHAT EW peopleBUCK when they WHAT? that is SO GROSS! what IS bucking? i am NEVER having sex! " and obviously the pictures that came to my mind were bambi and like cowboys on horseback. which was awkward for me. anyway) i specifically remember the phrase/word being used several times. bad call, wally lamb. regardless, the book was too good for that to tarnish my opinion of it.

I liked it. Not as good as his other books. It didn't seem to need to be as long as it was. Some parts were a snore, but I still liked most of the book.

This book rules. An absolute MUST read. The closest thing to a successor to Hunter S. Thompson that we have today, methinks.

First, I haven't read a legal/police thriller in about a year. Thus anything I say will be comparable to what I watch on L&O or NCIS. That being said, I really enjoyed reading a book with some ramped up suspense and thriller aspects without all of the blatant nudity, sex, and language. The evil serial killer was believable and his cohort was as well. Actually if he had let off a line of curse words, I would have been surprised because of his cool demeanor throughout. (view spoiler) Some said that it seemed formulaic but I would ask how a suspense/thriller piece could not be? In the end it provides for some fairly intense moments and some gore but not out of the ordinary for a book in genre. The ending did seem a little hah and corny but It worked for me. It was an enjoyable book and I picked up the next one in the series today from my church library. If you are looking for a close comparison I would say Plaguemaker by Tim Downs would be a close one. Really liked that one as well.

Ok, so it's more like 3.5, but i guess you can't split the darn stars. I thought it was a great book. The author beats you over the head with his thesis, but at least he's clear about what he's trying to get across.

I enjoyed this first book but it wasn't amazing like everyone had told me, maybe I knew too much of this story from clips of the movie that it didn't wow me like it would have if I read it when it first came out.

My thoughts: It is always interesting to read about real people in history that are relatively unknown. Susanna and John did live and meet. But all the intrigues made up around this story are the works of imagination, perhaps and who knows. This book is a nice mix of romance and intrigue. Susanna is sent to the court as a painter until her brother gets there, but she is a good artist on her own (though sadly nothing seems to be left of her work, we have only 2nd story sources). There she gets involved by accident in a dangerous plot to usurp the kingdom. Poor Susanna, she loved to paint and I liked how she saw the beauty in everything and just wanted to sit down and catch it in a sketch. She also had a good head on her shoulder and that is truly needed here. She is a damsel in distress, but at the same time not because she will fight back. But she would have been dead at once if it had not been for our hero John Parker. He saves her from murder attempts while he tries to figure out who is behind the scheme to take the throne. John is strong, smart and in the end I like him because I know he would do anything to protect the woman he is falling for, even go against a king if necessary. The plot thickens and makes this a real adventure. Because even if you catch one guy you still gotta find the man to controls everything. And trust me, they do not have it easy, because they will fight for their lives. I did mind one thing though, I felt at one time that enough was enough. There was no point in trying to kill poor Susanna any more since she had truly said all she knew. There are also more books coming and that makes me intrigued. First, there is a good ending so do not worry about cliffhangers or anything like that (and it is a happy one too). But I guess there will be another court intrigue to come since there sure were a lot back then. And especially with a king like this. Conclusion: I enjoyed the intrigues and the look at this court we all know so well. The romance was good and it was just a very short, easy and enjoyable book to read.
