One of the most touching stories ever written. And no, it's not Romance! It's Sci-Fi. This is a first person narrative that has been written as a series of progress reports from a deeply retarded man, who can barely be considered literate. His writing is ful of bad grammar and spelling mistakes. At first, if you are not prepared for it, this makes this book a little hard to read, and some passages even have to be re-read a couple of times before you understand them. Our protagonist goes through experimental brain surgery, that has the effect of gradually increasing his intelligence to that of a genius. His change from a retarded to a genius is beautifully conveyed by his improved spelling, grammar, sentence constructions, reflections and the way he relates and connects to his surroundings (and also how they relate to him in return). His journey is a tragic one, filled with regrets, hopes and dreams. This is one of the most heart-breaking stories that I have ever read. I read it first time in high school (the original short story) back in the late 80s/early 90s, and I haven't been able to let go of it since. This is one of those very rare books that just stays with you forever, whether you want it to or not. It's simply unforgettable, and it challenges you in more than one way. My praise could never do any justice to this masterpiece. You owe it to yourself to read it.As posted on my blog: http://rita.crowdedminds.com/flowers-...

It was good. Once again, Riordan merges the modern world with ancient mythology to make a fantastic novel.

The murder part was rather ludicrous, but the mystery itself was fun. Did Bounty mutineer Fletcher Christian return to England and entrust William Wordsworth with his story? I liked the investigating English prof and her 13-year-old black protege from the projects Tenille, though I wish Tenille had gotten to speak for herself more in a more distinctive voice.
The whole 14 book Oz series is a keeper that I read over and over.

I've had the author's other book Life As We Knew It on my to-read list for a while now, so when I went to the library and saw its companion book, The Dead & The Gone staring me in the face, I picked it up. It started out a little rough. I thought the author's writing style was a little bit elementary (i.e. "he did this. then he said 'blah.' then she said 'blah'.") and the characters fell flat, but once the action started moving I was interested in how Pfeffer was going to paint her apocalyptic NYC landscape. Tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, famine, volcanic eruptions and disease decimate everything, but unfortunately, I was not feeling the effects of the disaster along with the main character. Instead I kept wondering, you're going to church AGAIN? NOW?.

Not being able to control your temper is a potentially dangerous thing, not only for you, but for those around you as well. In 'Saving the Bodyguard' by Serena Yates, Leo Taber was angry, irritable, and obnoxious most of the time because he couldn't or wouldn't admit that he had a problem managing his anger. He finally admitted that maybe he had a problem and begrudgingly agreed to attend an anger management program. What he didn't realize when he walked through the doors at the anger management retreat, was that he was passing through a portal which would provide not only a better life, but would lead him to his true love. How strongly I feel about the characters usually determines how I feel about the story. If I like them I'm immediately sympathetic to their plight. However, Leo Taber was anything but likable. In fact, he was a bully, full of anger and frustration, often hurting other people. However, if he had not been so unbearable in the beginning, there would have been no contrast to show how much he changed after he learned some self control. His metamorphosis enabled him to be more agreeable, but also paved the way for him to be in a position to give and receive Felix's love. I finally had to admit that there was actually a considerate person underneath all that bluster and that he wasn't so bad after all. I felt Felix Oakden's befuddlement from the first moment he was introduced. The saying 'fish out of water' immediately came to mind. Felix had been cast out of an abusive relationship by a vindictive partner who made sure he was not only out of his life, but out of his chosen profession at the same time. Determined to survive, Felix took a job he disliked and was ill prepared for and tried to do his best. At first, I was convinced that he and Leo were an odd, potentially disastrous match, but the more I read, the more I saw that this was an excellent choice for the point trying to be made. They represented two sides of the same coin; one the abuser and the other the abused. Both needed to alter their behavior in order to live a healthier life. As Leo and Felix worked toward that goal, I couldn't help but cheer for their success. Especially for just a bite of a lustful story, Serena did an excellent job portraying just how debilitating and destructive uncontrolled anger can be and how, with help and a lot of hard work, it can be overcome resulting in a life which can be so much more fulfilling. 'Saving the Bodyguard' is a rough, sensual love story, full of emotional ups and downs, but with a happy ending. Leo and Felix found their balance and were happy together; their love for each other was what helped them heal. In the words of singer Tina Turner, “What's love got to do with it?” To which I reply, “Everything!” NOTE: This book was provided by Total-E-Bound for the purpose of a review on Queer Magazine Online

Excellent book!! It's emotional with highs and lows. Makes you remember your childhood and how simple life once was. Makes you reflect on love and life too. Tissues required.

Hilarious, touching and raw
This book was really powerful! It made me think how lucky I was to be born into a family with a good house and I go to great schools. I learned a lot about family and race in this book.
