Je mehr David über seinen Auftraggeber und die Umstände seines Auftrags herausfindet, desto tiefer gerät er in einen Strudel erschütternder Erkenntnisse und Ereignisse, die ihn an seinem Verstand zweifeln lassen. Alles scheint um ihn aufgebaut... Wie Der Schatten des Windes, Zafóns grandioser Vorgängerroman, spielt Das Spiel des Engels in Barcelona, allerdings ein paar Jahre vorher. Auch der Friedhof der vergessen Bücher und manches mehr des Schattens spielen eine Rolle und die atmosphärische, düstere Stimmung bleibt ebenfalls erhalten. So taucht man in eine stimmungsvolle, spannende Geschichte ein, die einen das Buch kaum einmal zur Seite legen läßt. Die Vorstellungskraft läuft auf Hochtouren, man bangt mit, wie es eben bei einem großartigen Roman sein sollte. Doch dann, nach den letzten hundert oder zweihundert Seiten, die ob der Spannung einen Endspurt beim Leser verursachen, gibt es doch noch einen Wermutstropfen für alle jene, die begeistert waren von der genialen Auflösung im Schatten des Windes, denn so etwas sucht man im Spiel des Engels vergebens. Wer gerne interpretiert, unterschiedliche Deutungen diskutiert, wird gut bedient, die anderen werden wohl mit einer kleinen Enttäuschung leben müssen. Dennoch machen der Schreibstil, die gekonnt erschaffene Atmosphäre im Barcelona der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, das Spiel des Engels zu einem sehr guten Buch, das nur nicht ganz an seinen Vorgänger Schatten des Windes heran reicht. Diesen muß man für das Verständnis nicht unbedingt lesen, empfehlenswert ist es allerdings schon, um den Wiedererkennungswert einiger Szenen und Namen auszukosten.

i don't care about what people say - this was a good book - perhaps because it was the first one i read after my finals in undergrad, and it was just such an easy read - perhaps because of all the intrigue about the catholic church, which interested me...but i read this without having known all the hype about it...so it was still kinda cool - definitely not literature, but if you want something fun and exciting, then I would say this is a good interlude.

Antes de mais devo agradecer à Editora Planeta por me ter oferecido este livro! Muito obrigada! Optei por ler este livro no início das minhas férias porque, como ia passar uns dias a Londres, lembrei-me de ler um livro com acção nessa cidade ou que tivesse relação com a história de Inglaterra. Uma vez que os senhores da Editora Planeta foram impecáveis comigo ao estabelecerem a parceria aqui com o blogue não hesitei e escolhi este livro! Este livro retrata a vida de Isabel de York, filha de Eduardo IV de Inglaterra, sobrinha de Ricardo III e esposa de Henrique VII. A época dos Tudor sempre me despertou a curiosidade e muitos já foram os livros publicados sobre o tema. Assim como séries televisivas, etc. Contudo,a época anterior aos Tudor é pouco ou nada divulgada cá em Portugal (pelo menos que eu tenha conhecimento!)e , por isso, foi óptima esta leitura que serviu sobretudo para conhecer melhor os acontecimentos anteriores a Henrique VIII cuja vida é muito conhecida um pouco por todo o mundo. É Isabel que nos conta a história, o que confere um tom mais intimista à narração. Isabel, inicialmente, é uma criança que não compreende o desenrolar dos acontecimentos que a rodeiam mas sente curiosidade pelos mesmos. A mãe de Isabel é o oposto do pai: enquanto a mãe é intriguista, interesseira, vingativa, o pai, pelo contrário, é bondoso, cordial, determinado, meigo... Mas serão estas características apropriadas a um rei? Envolta numa teia de intrigas, própria da vida na corte, Isabel vê-se privada dos que mais ama, é obrigada a casar com um homem que não ama e tem uma vida trágica e triste. Todas as descrições do livro são bastante realistas, sobretudo as que se relacionam com as virtudes e defeitos humanos e, com isto, ficamos a conhecer os antepassados de Henrique VIII o que poderá justificar (ou não) as suas condutas que muito bem conhecemos... Apesar de interessante, a partir de um determinado momento, a narrativa começa a ser muito repetitiva o que faz com que a leitura se torne mais difícil. Em suma,

I was prepared to really hate both Jonathan Franzen and FREEDOM. Both were so hyped, so lauded, and so smug-sounding that I had convinced myself that there was no way I'd appreciate, much less enjoy, this book. To my amazement, I was laughing to myself within reading the first 10 pages. I might ding FREEDOM a half-a-star if I could -- 1) for a couple of segues that seemed totally unnecessary and not at all germane to the plot, and 2) for the section where a teenage Joey gets involved in a Halliburton-esque business in Iraq and flies to Paraguay to broker a deal on jeep parts for the Army, which seemed a little too far-fetched, even though we're led to believe that Joey is very advanced and special for his age. That said, the rest of the book amazed me. The Franzen is a master at capturing the nuances of human nature and the human psyche. Ron Charles' review of FREEDOM in the WaPo describes it better than I ever could when he says, "In dialogue that conveys each palpitation of the heart, every wince of the conscience, and especially in those elegantly extended phrases of narration, Franzen conveys his psychological acuity in a fugue of erudition, pathos and irony that is simply fantastic." FREEDOM deals with such a quiet subject -- family and neighborhood dynamics, or, in essence, real and everyday life stripped clean of anything fantastic -- that it seems easy to miss the ambitiousness of it, and the brilliance of Franzen's execution. But throughout I kept thinking, "Maybe I could tackle a subject like that someday," and in the next thought would decide, "There's absolutely no way." Franzen accomplished something really special and spectacular here. I'm glad I read it.

Brilliant writing gives these characters incredible depth. This American family from the Midwest will often feel all too familiar to some. The prose may make it difficult for some to become engrossed early on, but words will take on beautifully significant meanings by the end. This is one book you should sit back, take your time, think about, and enjoy.

I absolutely loved Chris Cleaves' first book, Little Bee (if you haven't read it yet you should). So I bought this book expecting to be taken on the same fascinating emotional journey I went through with his previous novel. Unfortunately I was left disappointed. I love the concept of this novel, but I can't stand the protagonist, making it impossible for me to sympathize with her. I don't mind sad stories about depressed characters, but every tragic story needs a silver lining. Otherwise they just become too oppressive and unbearable. I failed to find that ray of hope in this novel, making it difficult to get through more than a few pages at a time. The first 6 paragraphs were the best part of the novel. The rest is just a let down. It should have only taken me a day to read this, instead it took me one whole unhappy week!
