I loved this book! It follows the stories of 4 Jordanian cousins, and the chapters jump through each of their stories. I never get tired of any of them. 3 of the cousins have moved to America, and 1 of them remains behind in Jordan. It seems as though this author was writing specifically for a more Western audience. She does a great job of balancing a world for the reader which makes you see clearly some of the differences and similarities between your own culture and theirs. Also, she does challenge some of the readers own ideas, but without alienating them. (ahem! In the Name of God ahem!)Woot. Read it.

Is this the greatest novel ever written? It's certainly up there, and my personal opinion is yes. From the controversial subject matter, beautiful language (written in Nabokov's second tongue) and depth of detail and emotion portrayed, Lolita makes for a great read from beginning to end. The middle section can seem slow, but if you can enjoy it for the descriptions of America and its people in the 50s as Humbert and Lo travel the country, you'll find much to appreciate. This novel will make you think and wonder about the human condition -- why is it accetable for some things to titilate us but not others? What most people are mistaken about is that Nabokov is advocating the older man/young girl relationship when in fact he is not. What he does is present a scenario that is remarkably and somewhat frighteningly human, and challenges the reader to come to their own conclusion on questions of normalcy and morality. I think everyone should read this book.

Although written two decades ago, this book is still compelling reading, even when the details (regarding crime scene processing, communication technologies, etc.) are a bit dated. Simon does a skillful job combining his story of the police with passages explaining the general criminal justice system in Baltimore/Maryland.

Memoir by my favorite professor in college. I used to love hearing his stories about growing up, serving in berlin during the cold war, and getting to where he ended up. This was definitely a personal labor of love for him, and it includes all of his own photographs as well, so I'd recommend this to anyone wanting a more personal exploration of post Korea, pre Vietnam America.

In Storm Born, Eugenie Markham is a powerful shaman who can banish fey and spirits out of the mortal world; with a wand and a glock. Her most recent case has her learning some disturbing things herself. Like a prophecy that proclaims she will give birth to a son who will lead a fey army to conquer the mortal world. I love that Eugenie is not a prude. Many times our PNR/UF heroines are either inexperienced or easily embarrassed by sex. Eugene is neither and that’s not to say she is slutty. I appreciate a protagonist with a healthy approach to sex. Dorian is great character that brought such some much needed levity to the story (ppl looking at you as an incubator can be a downer). Kiyo was OK. Didn’t love or hate him so we’ll see how the series goes. I didn’t like that the progression of the plot was contingent upon people in Eugenie’s life keep things from her but since this is the first book in the series it a little more forgivable. I like this series enough to continue it and I think it has the potential to become a favorite.

** spoiler alert ** It was pretty entertaining, but the ending kinda was just blah. I mean, it was a "happy" ending, I suppose, but I didn't find it very satisfying for how the rest of the book went. I actually agree with the "dorky" friends she ended up making - it was pretty selfish to assume she wouldn't miss the dorkier people of the school. It gets a third star just for the humor of the book, but the actual plotline only would get two.

Seth and I are reading this one. I read it to him probably 20 times a day. He just loves the bright colors. The artwork looks like a child painted it, so it's very stimulating for him. We just adore this one :)
