So far the best book on stock selection I have ever read - EVER. Unlike other stock investment books that suggest looking for value and buying and holding over the long term, this book shows you how to evaluate stocks, how to look for signals in the marketplace for market turns, and then gives great trading strategies about what to buy and sell at different points in the market. A SOLID read. I have become a great Cramer fan after reading this book. Excellent-Excellent Book.

One of the problems of African American literature is that the men pretend the women don't exist and the women normally write, quite understandably, about how all whites and black men oppresses them. This does not result in bad works, but books by male writers annoy women and books by women are considered "Women's Literature", because a woman's experience is always considered exceptional. In any case, this is an excellent book about what it meant to be black, in the States, in the thirties. Angelou writes mostly about her own life, but the way she weaves in the lives of her relatives is one of the most interesting protrayals of the life of a minority I've ever read. The language is beautiful without being too flowery. The structure is mostly episodic, which style books would frown upon, but is there any other way to tell the experiences of chilhood? It seems outdated because it's almost forty years old, but this is the place to start if someone wants to know more about African American history through literature and biography.

This rule is not valid for an individual because it is concerned with the management of a monastery. Even so, there are lessons for everyone. It's good as a History book, it's good for Sociology or Anthropology, and for Christians, it can have a double use: letting us see what goes on inside a comtemplative community, and giving us life lessons. The language is simple but descriptive enough. I love one of the early chapters, which says "always ask God to help you finish what you start". So, it acknowledges the creative impulse and the goodness in people, while God is necessary to help us along so that the initial "push" is kept all along. Very positive for the 6th century, isn't it?
Had to go back to the library before I finished, but I would buy a copy...if there weren't so many other books that catch my eye at the bookstore.

It's a great concept...shepherd dead and his sheep must find out who killed him. Difficult to pull off, but very well done. I believed that these sheep could solve a murder. I highly recommend this mystery to all lovers of the who dunnit.

There is so much in this book to make you say “Wow”. Sure, there’s a lot here that’s been done before… a post-apocalyptic world where the people are oppressed and forced to take part in some winner-takes-all contest to the death is nothing new, but here it is done so well. Katniss is everything you would expect from a girl that’s had to take care of herself and her family most of her life. She’s simple, straight to the point, does what needs to be done however she has to, and yes, a little cold. But she’s also stunted. She’s so busy being a grown-up that she’s never had time to be a teenage girl, and her people skills are certainly lacking. When she throws herself into the Games in order to save her much younger sister, she’s forced to come to terms with her weaknesses. The Games themselves are a horrifying construction. 24 children (yes, children — they’re all 18 or younger) are forced into an arena of unknown makeup (will it be a forest? a desert? a frozen wasteland? will there be water? wildlife? edible plants?) and are left there to kill or be killed until there is one victor. As if that alone isn’t enough, the games makers are there to shake things up and encourage battle, and the entire thing is televised, 24 hours a day. Katniss’s fight for survival is not only a physical one, but an emotional one, as she struggles with her feelings for fellow tribute, Peeta. Since there is a second book (and supposedly a third), I’m going to assume that you realize that Katniss makes it through this alive. However, all is not necessarily well, and the way the book ends makes you wish there was just one more chapter. The abruptness of the ending has upset some people, but I think it’s appropriate. It leaves you wondering and a little bit confused, much like Katniss is herself. Because remember, despite what she’s done and what she’s been through, she’s still just a 16 year old girl. As a side note, if you’re considering this for your young adult reader, there’s no sex or bad language here, but there is a *lot* of violence, some of it quite gruesome. Can’t wait for book 2.

This book starts off with a brilliant summary of B.E. Ellis' career, and then slides unseamlessly into his married life. My enjoyment level dropped slowly until his climactic set of hallucinations brought the book back to life for a few chapters. Overall, Lunar Park alternates between the traditional hedonistic Bret Easton Ellis we all know [and love?:] and the prose of some born-again family man who compares raising children to the mass-murdering Patrick Bateman. That part didn't fly with me, even if Patrick Bateman was based on Ellis' own father. It's not a bad book, though. I enjoyed the addition of "The Writer", who separated himself quite cleverly from the narrator. You should read it with caution if you're a Bret Easton Ellis fan, and if you're not a fan, this book is a childrens' version of American Psycho, like a beginner's version, but there are too many references to understand everything if you've never read Ellis' classic that was turned into an even better movie.

Okay, so it wasn't mind blowing and there weren't loads of serious facts and figures about immigration, but this was a humourous take on a situation based on reality. We all know it happens but the way Marina has written it, a buxom, somewhat cheap, tarty but somehow seductive Ukranian 'divorcee' marrying an eccentric former Ukranian refugee who has established and legal British roots, just so she can get a passport and money, gives you a laugh whilst at the same time makes you realise that actually people will go to any length sometimes for the chance of a 'better life', though that better life very much depends on the person you are! Marina hasn't gone into any great political detail although her brief accounts of life pre and post war in Ukraine do have the desired shock factor and educate you which I think has more of an effect than some long winded spiel. I think she has brought together a story of human understanding through a funny and well written tale that nevertheless has a sting in its tale - whether you choose to acknowledge that sting is up to the reader. The characters are well described through their voices, characteristics and habits and bring the story to life. I certainly think Marina has a genius for the eccentric character and for understanding of the human character.

Bill Bryson puts the fun in history, and I need that to want to listen (or care, really). I bought the book, too, but his voice is just so funny when he's reading his work!

Just so beautiful! Good story, good writing, Hosseini should be really proud of himself, to write such a beautiful book that moves everyone.

Michael Forsythe üçlemesinin ikinci kısmı The Dead Yard'ı dört gözle bekliyorum.
