** spoiler alert ** Chinese culture of the 19th century is illuminated through the story of two young girls who become friends through an arranged meeting based on characteristics of their birth. One is socially better off than the next, but both girls anticipate good marriages if their foot-bindings are successful and produce the golden lilies so desired by the men. Women live and eat separately from the men occupying their time with cooking and sewing. They have also perfected a secret writing unreadable by men by which Lily and Snow Flower communicate on the folds of a fan. A misunderstanding though causes a rift in their friendship that takes years to resolve.

I absolutely loved this book! Could be one of my new favorites. Barbara Kingsolver is a great writer and I will definitely pick up her other books. She's a very moving, poetic writer and you really invest in the family of characters. The oldest sister, Rachel, is a hoot and provides a few laugh out loud moments, too. You do need to be in a certain mood to read this book - it isn't a light topic. And it picks up the further you get into the book. But I highly recommend it!

I loved the (Swedish) film, and since I like a bit of horror now and then, I thought I should enjoy this. I probably read about a quarter of the book and simply couldn't finish it. Too much of an holiday page-turner. Wooden characterisation, boring, no suspense, very American translation. If you loved the film, don't read this book. You can borrow it if you like; in fact you can keep it.
Gritty and endearing, this novel features two main characters who's lives of golden possiblity dissolved and dissipated into debauchery, but they are unabashed by the change. They take a young, friendless, familyless girl under their wings, for lewdly nefarious purposes, but end up transforming her life into a life of potential and meaning. They teach her to accept her life as a whole and to see the world around her with transformed eyes. She realizes that the men are not wholly good or bad, but merely men and she comes to love them for their personhood. It's an interesting read. I may be careful who I recommend it to, but I found it endearing and engaging. I highly recommend the movie A Love Song for Bobby Long, which is based on the book, though loosely.

2010 Newbery Medal "When You Reach Me" pays direct homage to Madeleine L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time." I haven't read "Wrinkle" since probably Jr. High (knowing it's about time travel is probably enough to get the main points, but I did go to Wikipedia to read "Wrinkle's" synopsis so I would get more of the references), and this book definitely makes me want to read it again. Luckily, Stead's story is not merely sycophantic, but has its own wonderful narrative and strong characters.
