The Summerhill School was in many ways an experiment based around the question, "What happens if we allow children to learn when and what they wish in a naturalistic, everyone-helps-make-the-school-run setting?" Regardless of one's views on the answer to that question, the description of the school, the children, and its successes and failures is really worth reading, particularly for those of you out there who are educators. Educational theories do seem to go in cycles. This is a good snapshot of a particular concept at a moment in time that allowed it, in many ways, to work.

Beautifully written. Moves along smoothly like a current in the wind. Culturally interesting. I am afraid my son who has to read it for a high school english assignment will hate it, because it lacks action, suspense and physical conflict... more of a chick book, but I love it.

I am a devote fiction reader. I love the world that fiction brings me too. But recently I have not been able to stay into any story I picked up. So I decided to try the non-fiction aspect of the world. I was bored with life and went straight to the best sellers section of Barnes and Nobles, browsed the shelf until the cover caught my eye. I opened to the synopsis of the story to find my self intrigued with the first paragraph. Reading it made me realize a lot about my self and the world around me. And made my own feelings of how I my self was raised, to appreciate it a lil more. and to continue to strive to make a change. This story has really opened my eyes. and I hope it does for others as well.

Like any anthology, pretty hit-or-miss. Many of the artists don't seem to understand how to integrate speech balloons into their art, and Willingham seems to have written a bunch of stories for the sake of making a collection, not out of any real desire to tell a full story. It's a bit of back story on many of the characters, which is nice and all, but on the whole, I fear it's somewhat forgettable.

I've been waiting to read this one for a long time, so I expected that, after so long, it would probably disappoint me. It didn't. Walpuski's Typewriter is a "truly silly" story, as Frank Darabont says in his introduction. He also says it's "old-fashioned," and he's right about that, too. But, as most people who know me know, I've got something of a soft spot for silly horror stories, and for old-fashioned ones, too, and Walpuski's Typewriter has all the best of both of those worlds. It's the kind of story that would have been right at home in an issue of Creepy or Eerie, or on an episode of Tales from the Crypt. And it's also the kind of story you'll probably read in one sitting. And the illustrations by Bernie Wrightson don't hurt a bit, though they're not, as Darabont claims, "the reason to buy the book." The book is plenty of reason all by itself. (One disclaimer here, though. If, like my lovely wife, you have trouble with stories in which violent and unpleasant fates befall pets, especially cats, then this is emphatically not the book for you.)

Considered the bible of North American birds. Beautifully illustrated plates painted by the author himself.
This book changed how I looked at the world, government in particular. I think it's especially relevant to the US today. I intend to reread it sometime in the next couple of years. If you haven't read it, you should.

I'm a sucker for a fractured fairy tale. What I liked best about this tale was that Elena was no damsel in distress. She took matters in her own hand, shaped her own destiny and even rescued her own prince. Much better than the hand-wringing that typically goes on in these novels! The author created a fascinating world in this book - can't wait to visit it again!
