I guess I'd really give this 3.5 stars. It was fine, but it tainted the film version for me, which is what I grew up with. There were some fun things about the book, but I completely prefer the movie.

It took a bit longer to read because the author's way of writing is a bit different than what I'm used to but after I finished it, it left me with mixed emotions. Many people told me I was going to cry at the end etc. but I didn't feel such strong emotions. I mean, I've read books which have literally made me cry my eyes out but not this one. It certainly showed me a different point of view towards the Second World War and I felt kind of sad sometimes for the characters but I wasn't able to connect to them like I've been able to do with other characters. The book is good, I can't say it's a bad book but it's kind of different than what I'm used to.

I laughed out loud for three quarters of this book. Then the story just kind of fizzled out... like the author felt she needed to wrap things up and get the book out there. I was disappointed even though my expectations were nothing more than to enjoy some girl fluff.

A well-told story about a turn of the century English explorer who spent his life looking for a "hidden" city in the Amazon jungle. As seems to happen a lot with historical non-fiction, there is not much story resolution (real life gets in the way of a good story so often), particularly since Fawcett eventually disappeared into the jungle and was never found. This leads to the author himself going to the Amazon and trying to tie things together, which didn't exactly work for me. Nevertheless, a very solid read.

** spoiler alert ** I like chic-lit, but quality chic-lit. This book did not fall into the quality category. I did not find the story of a screen-writer and famous movie star, being lost in the Alaskan wilderness because of an attempt to murder one of them, very believable. I did not find the characters interesting and was not surprised when the two ended up together.
