I read this one in high school and liked it, but read it again 10 years later and loved it. This one is definitely worth the re-read!

Everyone in the world should read this book. This describes the state of affairs of the world in terms of energy- particularly are use of and dependence upon oil. It also lists the alternative energy fuels and describes how each of them could be used as alternate sources. It's dense, and depressing because we really don't have an option that could replace the way we use oil today. But please don't let that deter you from reading it. I am an eternal optimist and I think that we humans are capable of adaptation. Particularly when it involves our survival as a race.

I learned a little bit about volcanoes, but otherwise just o.k.

very different from other cozy mysteries. My biggest problem was the "wine" factor of the main character, "why me...". Otherwise very interesting and well written - and the main character is a librarian.

Beatrice has a huge decision to make...stay in the faction that she grew up in, the one she tries so hard to fit into, or select another. The inconclusive test results aren't much a help and only add more confusion as she is told not to say anything...what does being Divergent mean though? Beatrice, or Tris as she later calls herself, see's a world completely different then what she's used to and wants to prove that she belongs (she's short and a girl, let me tell you the faction takes no pity on that!). Along the way she discovers more about herself, how love can change you and and a plot that puts her old faction in danger. It is an extreme view of society, than again it is a dystopian after all. Although well meaning originally, you can see how harmful it is to focus one one aspect as the five factions do. Life is all about balance and this shows you why. As I love character driven stories, the one thing I found weak here was any emotion for Tris. With all the action overpowering her transformation through extreme choices, I didn't feel much for her on a personal level. Full of non-stop, adrenaline pumping action, Divergent will suck you in and take you for the ride of your life. I read outside my comfort zone of cutesy stories and now am hoping some of Tris' braveness will rub off. I must admit, I doubt I would have even made it onto the train to even begin the initiation LOL.

I was planning on not reading this book for my book club this month and then I decided that I should at least read the first 1-2 chapters to say that "I tried it," and I'm so glad that I did! It's an amazing true story that the author lists as a novel since she wrote it about her grandmother's life and had to fill parts in. Lily, the main character, was a fabulous woman born way before her time and is such an inspiration! However, she did not live her life as if she had very many obstacles in front of her. If she wanted to do it, she did it. If something needed taken care of, she did it. If a plan was needed, she came up with it. She was unbelievably smart. She was truly an amazing, tough "broad" that did more in a month of her life than I will accomplish in my whole life! At 15 she got on a horse by herself, had a gun with her, and rode 500 miles away from home, through the desert, to become a teacher in a one room schoolhouse with no books. The trip took her a month and that's just one example of the many, many things she did in her lifetime during a time when women were only allowed to be nurses, teachers, or nuns (as she says many times throughout the book). I definitely judged this book by it's cover, but I'm so glad I picked it up and gave it a chance. It's a very fast read - a great rainy day book that can be read in a day or two.
Without giving away anything from the story I'll just say I would have preferred more closure...but otherwise a great story.
