This is a great book for anyone with a dog. If your dog is bad you will feel like you're in good company and if your dog is good this book will make you think they deserve saint hood. As with any good pet book it is a bit of a tear jerker so be prepared.

I wasn't charmed completely by this book. There were definitely some nice moments in it and I liked some of the techniques that Annie used as a medium. My main complaint is that the book is too ethereal in the narrative style, it's like 229 pages of exposition, I never felt like I was present for any of the action really, not until right and the end and maybe that was Slavin's intent. I can certainly see why she would aim for this fragile kind of feel to it, Annie as a character is certain very fragile and I don't think that's a bad thing, I actually liked her quite a bit as the protagonist but the insubstantial narrative really undermined a lot of the writing for me. Especially when the 'mystery' surrounding her husband is actually revealed, I felt no impact. In the end this isn't a book I would recommend to other people, I read it because I am fascinated by mediums and spiritualism personally, I just think it's a really interesting, spooky subject and this novel just didn't live up to its own potential for me.

3.25 stars This book summary contains spoiler; and I need to write it down so I can remember what happens: (view spoiler) The book starts a bit slow for me. Charley's ADD keeps distracting me (it's my problem since book #1). Plus, not enough Reyes for the first 50 pages ... and when he appears, he seems to either angry at Charley or manipulating her or puts her as bait to do his mission. Why, Ms. Jones, why?!? I need Reyes to be all good!! Though considering that he IS the Son of Satan, I shouldn't be so surprised, should I? But after few chapters, things actually pick up ... Despite her problem keeping things in focus, Charley is actually able to solve the missing wife's case as well as tracking down some names for Reyes. She IS a capable P.I. and I enjoy that part of investigation. The story about Reyes's past is engaging, and my heart breaks for young Reyes. My heart stops bit during that part where I assume (view spoiler) and totally happy with the twist. I like the guardian that "angels" seem to put on Charley now; looking forward to reading about the guardian in the next book :). I do wonder what Ms. Jones is going with that biker guy, Donovan though. I definitely do not want him to be "another" love interest for Charley, since I want more Reyes. AAAAND, last word, it's great to see a glimpse of what Charley can actually do. I wonder what the story arc will bring next when Charley realizes her true power.

Osama bin Laden is dead! I get a ton of teaching-related emails, and I kept hearing about this book everywhere. I'm really into this type of book - things that I can do as a teacher to help my students. Any techniques and/or strategies really excite me because I like to try new things to engage students or get my classroom running more efficiently. So I requested this book from another bib and it came to me and I was so excited to read it! This book was the bomb. I was super, super interested in from the first technique until the last. The 49 techniques are things that I can incorporate into the classroom the second after I read them - and I did incorporate some of them into my seventh/eighth grade class that I'm teaching right now! A few of them I didn't really "get" or I couldn't see myself doing those things, but the point of this book isn't that you'll be the perfect teacher and have the perfect class if you do all 49 of the techniques. The point is that these are things that successful teachers have done, and maybe they will work for you, maybe not. Either way, it's worth a try. Anyway, great book! I even bought it... that says a lot. Granted, I did buy it from the Borders that was going out of business, so it was 60% off... I wouldn't have bought it otherwise. :)

Without exaggeration, this is one of the best works of contemporary fiction that I have ever read. The story is gripping, "heart-wrenching", filled with insights and literary quotes that will move your soul in ways that not many books do. I thought that I would get lost in the medical technicalities, but I found them fascinating--especially b/c my mother had open heart surgery in 2001. The characters are complex, rich, and make you wish you lived in the lakehouse next door! I can't say enough, but I won't say anymore, except that this is a must read and must have...

Shiloh was one of my favorite Battle books! It is the classic story of a boy's love for a dog- not my favorite premise for a book, but this one was marvelous! Marty falls in love with a beagle, Shiloh, who has run away from his abusive owner. In a desperate attempt to save the animal, Marty hides it and begins a frenzied (but hopeless) attempt to earn the money to buy Shiloh from his owner. This simple, amazing story somehow manages to weave in valuable lessons about love, honor and the value of working hard for what you want. I would recommend this book to anybody and I can't wait to share it with my own son!
