The Dexter series by Jeff Linday is wonderful! My husband and I watch the television series on Showtime and thoroughly enjoy it, but as is usually the case, the books are infinitely better - and that is saying a lot because Showtime has done a phenomenal job with the show. My favorite part is how Dexter views himself and the world. His inner monologue is priceless. You just have to pick up these books and read them right away!

I enjoyed it. Stayed up late trying to finish it. I can't always stay awake, let alone past my bedtime. That's how good it was. I'll be starting the next book very soon.

Gordimer is an incredible writer. She makes ingrown hairs sound poetic. I found the whole solitude of the self theme to be particularly captivating and upsetting. I think perhaps one of the things I loved so much about this book, aside from the writing itself, was the multidimensionality of the characters, to the extent that I could never make up my mind if I even liked any of them.

Intense and interestingly structured, informative and yet personal. I really enjoyed the weaving of these stories. It's not the greatest mystery, and some of the characters seem slightly undefined, but they came together well and enjoyably.

A bit more polished than the first one, though I still don't understand why the main character insists on walking right up to a wandering zombie and blasting it with a firearm, when he knows for certain that the report of the gun will attract many more zombies. Why doesn't he learn? He knows that remaining silent is important, he knows that he can handle a single roamer without a firearm, he knows that he's putting himself in danger by continuing to dispatch the odd wanderer with a firearm, and yet he still does it? Why doesn't he get an axe/bat/crowbar/hammer/slingshot? I don't get it. Otherwise, this series is notable for apparently copious amounts of research on military equipment, tactics, and jargon, all of which add a substantial element of realism.

Harry is confronted by a serial killer who's marker is a snowman. Married women with children are the targets, and this is linked to some medical problem to do with paternity/genetic diseases. The killer seems to be setting the agenda, and has targetted Harry in some personal way. Finally, Rakel is threatened and her life is in danger, as well as her son's Oleg's. Hole wins in the end, but loses a finger to the killer. Good thriller, perhaps a bit too much plot, but very inventive.

Although good enough to keep reading, I found myself looking forward to the next book. I've been told that in the movie the beast is similar to the tattooed youth on the cover of the book that I read, and I think I would have preferred a fully modern version of the classic tale . . .

One of Themerson's detective stories, he was a bit obsessed with the genre and with subverting it. I guess he was also subverting the reading habits of his small literary audience. He gives all the facts of the crime as if by accident, in a series of dislocated vignettes recounted from different particpant's perspectives. It's set in a pre-boom Majorca, the pages of my copy are bleached very white and the lightness of the composition combined to The classis elements of Themerson are all there; a mention of a certain polish general's offspring; a natural promotion of sexual freedom; many female characters; very little characterisation beyond types; a granparent with a lot of energy; the start of a new life; mathematical games and a good helping of allusions and references. Themerson's writing isn't the greatest literature, but it's full of enthusiasm for knowledge. You can feel his pleasure in telling a convoluted tale with humour and incite. The police get thier man but they've missed out on the real mystery, which is almost incidental to the action. The mystery of the sardine.
