If I were to draw a Venn diagram of my wife's literary tastes and mine, there would be very little overlap. She finds my favorite books unreadable, while I am bored by the Harry Potter books that captivate her. So it was with more than a little trepidation that I read this book on her recommendation. I knew she liked it and I didn't want to upset her if I hated it. Well, she has been holding out on me. It's been a long time since I have been as charmed and captivated by a book as I was by The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. Flava de Luce is a precocious eleven year old, living with her distant widowed father and two older sister at their English country estate in 1950. Flavia loves to torment her sisters Ophelia and Daphne, who in turn barely tolerate her. Flavia seems more comfortable with adults or alone with her chemistry experiments, chemistry being her true passion. When Flavia witnesses a man die on her family's property, she takes it upon herself to solve the murder. I really can't do justice to the charm and delight of this book by mere description. Flavia is truly an original. She is smart, funny and truly a brat, but so full of life that she is always captivating. I found myself laughing out loud many times while reading. I suppose true mystery afficiandos might not find the plot truly engrossing, but I much like the No.1 Ladies' Detective series, the mysteries are not really the point here. It's about the characters and Flavia is one of kind. There are minor characters who are just as charming like Mrs. Mullett the cook with her terrible pies and Dogger the heroic valet, who may be Flavia's true role model. I loved, loved, loved this book and cannot wait to get to the next.

After reading Eric Drexler's Engines of Creation this gave me a better understanding into how far we've come with nanotechnology. However, the field is moving so fast that this book already seems really outdated.

I can't say it plainer than this: Best Play Ever. If you don't like it, you can go eat a bag of hell. Ingeniously constructed, verbally brilliant, intellectualism gone wild. Tom Stoppard wins.
great book cant wait till the next one
My newest favorite. The most impressive thing about this book is Portis' portrayal of Mattie Ross--and a portrayal it is. He embodies this character as fully as any actor on any stage. Her voice is perfectly consistent and every movement is believable. The book reads exactly like a product of its setting and not of its time; if I didn't know it was written in the 1960s, I would have readily believed it was written in the 1910s. Pitch perfect in every way.

Well done and well written - but a dark book overall.

A great read. One of those books you hate to put down, and yet, you hate to finish it.

be patient...not an initial attention-getter but when it does grab you...you are hooked.

A book about interesting people in challenging times. A nonfiction portrayal of a family living at the Warsaw zoo during the WWII. The author did a wonderful job with imagery. Yet, many of the characters were only given a cursory glance.
This is almost everything we love about Clementine, but the voice feels like it's missing, which surprised me.
I hve 2 admit, the 1st one was way better.
