Despite its faults, The Demon-Haunted World is an entertaining and inspiring book. Sagan's passionate defense of the methods of science and equally passionate attacks on pseudoscience and antiscience make the book. There are serious organizational and thematic problems, which is partially due to the dual authorship of the final chapters. The two biggest flaws of the book, in my view, are Sagan's failure to explain the scientific method, and Sagan falling into the fallacial arguments he himself criticizes (e.g., false dichotomy). I fear that, because of his approach, Sagan will lose the attention of the people who most need to read this book - religious and pseudoscientific devotees. If that happens, Sagan is preaching to the choir (for lack of a better term) throughout the book - and the choir would like something more substantial than attacking American tabloids and ufologists. At the book's best, Sagan defends scepticism and undermines credulity, while inspiring readers with the accomplishments of sceptical thinking. At its worst, Sagan is rambling to already sceptical readers about the misdeeds of the Catholic church. Notable quotations from the book: "In every such society, there is a cherished world of myth and metaphor which co-exists with the workaday world. Efforts to reconcile the two are made, and any rough edges at the joints tend to be off-limits and ignored. We compartmentalize. Some scientists do this too, effortlessly stepping between the sceptical world of science and the credulous world of religious belief without skipping a beat. Of course, the greater the mismatch between these two worlds, the more difficult it is to be comfortable, with untroubled conscience, with both....Except by sealing the brain off into separate air-tight compartments, how is it possible to fly in airplanes, listen to the radio or take antibiotics while holding that the Earth is around 10,000 years old or that all Sagittarians are gregarious and affable?" "[T]he chief deficiency I see in the sceptical movement is in its polarization: Us v. Them - the sense that we have a monopoly on the truth; that those other people who believe in all these stupid doctrines are morons; that if you're sensible, you'll listen to us; and if you're not, you're beyond redemption. This is unconstructive. It does not get the message across. It condemns the sceptics to permanent minority status; whereas, a compassionate approach from the beginning acknowledges the human roots of pseudoscience and superstition might be much more widely accepted." "There is nothing which can better deserve our patronage than the promotion of science and literature. Knowledge is in every country the surest basis of public happiness." -George Washington, address to Congress 8 January 1790

A childhood favorite. When I was in fourth grade, I was going to run away and hide in the library just like Claudia and Jamie did at the museum.
Why did this book amuse the world? It's entertaining to read, I won't deny that, but it doesn't follow you after you've taken it down.
ALsion gave this to me as a gift and it is one of my favorite books of all time. Love those ladies!

pacing and interest still high, especially narration on Tak's nonchalant driving skills through the 5 hairpin turns (he's that damn good :P) think about getting volumes in sets of two in the future as the next challenge is always in the following book, a sly tactic to get you to keep reading/buying...
This is one of the best picture books ever. The simple tale of a child who looses "Knuffle Bunny," I laughed aloud at the book store when I first read it. The illustrations are priceless, and Knuffle Bunny is too cute for words.
