While, generally, nonfiction is not my choice of reading material, I found this book of stories about the events of the Great Depression to be very compelling. B. Virdot, an alias of Sam Stone (the grandfather of the author), put a small advertisement in the "Canton Repository" in December 1933. That small ad spawned letter upon letter that he answered with a check for five dollars (of the many he actually received, he chose to answer 150 of them.). Ted Gup, the author, obtained these letters nearly twenty-five years after his grandfather's death, and began to track down the families of the recipients. In so doing, he discovered the world of the Great Depression through the stories of these families. Further, he discovered and related the story (and subterfuges) of his grandfather's life, too. The book was very illuminating, and certainly explains so much of the frugality of the generations that lived through the "Hard Times".

Steampunk Salad Recipe: take one-half cup Clockwork Angel, stir in a couple nice, strong young women -- for an unusual twist! add several likeable guys -- at least two per girl, toss in rapidly developing superpowers and some interesting references to jekyll and hyde, top with a moderate amount of editing and some predictable plot twists to taste. voila! a harlequin teen winner! and i'm definitely hooked for the sequel. PG13 green. a couple b*words, some violence and peril, a little substance use but no abuse (if that makes sense), also, one character can contact the dead as part of his superpowers -- not a major plot point, but may bother some cleanreaders. appropriate for 14 and up

I read this book after reading Marek Halter's 'Sarah', and the stories are similar, takign place in about the same time period. The writing style is simple and easy to follow, the female characters are fleshed out with personalities, but the men seem to be a tad one dimensional. I suppose that isn't important though, as this is a story about women, as the title suggests.

Marina Fiorato's "The Glassblowers of Murano" is somewhat uneven. The chapters which deal with old world Venice are fascinating, but the modern-day chapters constitute a somewhat pedestrian romance. The protagonist, Leonora Manin, is an American glassblower who visits Venice to learn more about her ancestor, a glassblower named Corradino. The historical sections of the book, dealing with Corradino's life, are well-researched and quite fascinating. I learned a great deal about the art of glassblowing, and the techniques employed to create mirrors during the Italian Renaissance (just to name one example). However, the chapters that dealt with Leonora, and her romance with a Venetian policeman, were predictable and fell a little flat. Furthermore, her dealings with chauvinistic craftsmen painted stereotypes of both Americans and Italians that did not sit well with me at all. (Review based on Advance Readers' Edition.)

I thought this book was full of hilarious stories, about the authors' childhood. This book was by FAR better than the movie.

Props to Mercedes Lackey for the most groan-worthy twist ending to a story that I have read in a long time.

My daugher was writing a paper on the Brooklyn Bridge and used this book. I read it and loved it. It's the story of the building of the bridge during a time in America of great optimism. Amazing what people can do and endure!

Well written! Held my attention although I felt it could have been shortened a bit. The middle section seemed to drag which is how I felt when I read Rebecca.
