Probably the perfect piece of 1970s New York rock nerd wish fulfillment. Please Kill Me makes you feel like all the cool rock stars are your friends telling you stories from their heyday. I wish it were 1,000 pages.

Kind of hated Gemma at first for doing what she was told. She's weird and everything. But I like the suspense feeling.

Kio Shimoko writes funny, low-key, utterly believable characters, his backgrounds are meticulously, ludicrously detailed. Only one more volume to go, and I will probably cry copious, manly tears when it comes out. One of my favorite comics, ever.

All in all, I liked this book a lot. I haven't been to law school, so I can't vouch for how closely Turrow's account mirrors other "one L" experiences, but I think that some of those who dock the book on this point may want to consider that Turrow was writing in the 1970s and from Harvard Law School, which, the book makes clear, tries very hard to be extraodinary in all ways. It's safe to assume that the student experience at Harvard -- particularly those that predate the period of reform the author suggests was on the horizon -- differ greatly from those at less august institutions and in an era of more liberal/humane instruction.
great plot twist at the end! not the best book in the world, but really entertaining.

I thought this book was pretty good - I like suspense and tension tinged with a bit of craziness. So this one held me until the end. However, I am not a fan of cliffhanger endings in books and I didn't think this one was good enough to leave me hanging. And, it was an intensely unhappy book - betrayal, loss, anger, hurt and not much happiness. I had been hoping for some creepiness and good characters but I got lots of depression and sadness. Still, it was a good read.

Taking a break from this one... I used to always finish books I started too.
Genius!

I had read this book several years ago and decided to reread as earlier Michael Pollan. It covers four plants in some detail (apples, tulips, marijuana, and Potatoes) and how the plants have evolved in a symbiotic relationship with humans. Its an easy read and has a considerable amount of interesting material. Not as provocative as The Omnivores Dilema but a good read.
Somewhat tedious, bordering on annoying at times. I forgot how much I dislike British-English novels; the same foreign-to-me terms tend to grate on me, and I notice their repeated use much more than I'm sure I would the American-English equivalent. This book wasn't entirely too predictable, though I almost didn't care by the end because I was so ready for it--and the main character's whiny, static personality--to be DONE.
